Boost walking and cycling in towns and cities, urges UK government adviser

“Cars particularly destroy the liberty of the child and the teenager to move around safely,” it said. “Children are much less free now than they were 50 or 100 years ago, a fact which changes the nature and vitality of our towns.”

UK doctors who receive convictions for climate protests face threat of being struck off

Particularly alarming given how permissible forms of protests in the UK are being continually restricted.

"The English councils’ current financial gap [is] about £4bn a year, which could have been filled more than twice over by the money used for that...cut in . He seems to still think that councils must sink or swim:...he & his allies in the rightwing press have reprised old and stupid rhetoric about millions supposedly being wasted on “consultants” and “diversity schemes”."

I started my journey with bushcraft school led by Hannah Nicholls, a genuinely kind and compassionate woman. Hannah is now recovering from bacterial meningitis and unable to work, her family have set up this crowdfunder to help support her recovery.

Crowdfunding campaign by to get advertising on buses encouraging drivers to give cyclists space. Because the government isn't interested in promoting anything that might be seen as constraining car drivers in any way.

I pulled this lipstick plant out of a skip outside the vet over a decade ago when I was living in London - there were three of them but I could only carry one and a feisty cat in a carrier. It plodded along for years in various places I lived in the interim until I left it at my parents' house last year, and some magical combination of light and conditions there mean it's now thriving.

I'm sick of just having to accept that this is how the world works now, of seeing everything get worse over the course of my career. This has now happened to just about every amazing place I've been privileged to work, filled with amazing people contributing knowledge that enriches all of humanity.

Kew gutted its scientific capacity years ago and its beautiful herbarium is going to become luxury flats. The Imperial campus I did my Masters on is now a business school, because teaching wannabe Apprentice candidates to talk bollocks is more profitable than researching the crops we need to eat. Someone just needs to turn LSHTM into a betting shop or something to complete the set.

If anything encapsulates how messed up the "engagement at all costs" model of algorithmic recommendation is, a friend of mine just sent me a link to a tiktok video about house sparrows. I don't have tiktok, watch anything like that in a browser with various tracking prevention measures so tiktok presumably has no idea what I'm interested in or what to show my next. (1/2)

European cars are getting 1cm wider every 2 years

"Crash data from Belgium from 2017 to 2021 shows that a 10cm increase in the height of vehicle fronts raises the risk of death by 30% when a car hits a pedestrian or cyclist, according to a study by the Vias Institute, previously the Belgian Institute for Road Safety."

With cars getting 5mm wider every year, and bigger cars more likely to kill other road users as well as pumping out ever more emissions, Paris votes to triple parking charges for . This seems like an excellent strategy for avoiding the potentially regressive nature of schemes like London't which potentially penalises poorer people with older cars.

have the right idea but seem to accidentally target mobility vehicles a bit, parking fees proportional to danger and damage (that escalate every year as better public transport alternatives become available) seems like the way to go

Update: With cars getting 5mm wider every year, and bigger cars more likely to kill other road users as well as pumping out ever more emissions, Paris votes to triple parking charges for vehicles over 1.6 tons, some, but not all of which, are SUVs, a distinction that is apparently important to car nerds.

Reading @pluralistic's and will say more about the actual book on Bookwyrm later, but I'm weirdly struck by the fact it's the second book I've read in the past couple of months set in new future where Twitter still exists. Like it's fascinating the assumptions we make about what is an immutable part of our world and how quickly those assumptions can be overturned, even for authors whose whole thing is anticipating the future and questioning the present
