    Here at the university of Iowa, trans people are the only ones targeted by the cops when bigots are invited to give speeches, and we protest them. We have them on record in court testimony saying they do this!

    You haven't heard from me on the Cass Report because I'm busy at work, and halfway through the last of the Oh Shit articles. I haven't had a chance to read it in any detail.

    But from the skimming I've done, and even early scholarly rebuttals, it sure as hell looks like a textbook example of how to produce sham science, even independent of its impact on trans kids' lives.

    @lisamelton @rooster I can't afford the time for electrolysis. I've considered doing one of those services where you go in and they work on you all day. But I don't know.
    Until then, it's the daily dysphoria of shaving.
    Also, in tiny Iowa City, we have 1 person who does electrolysis. And she grew up in the Nixon white house and Daley Sr.'s mayoral mansion. She's trippy,

    There are so many of us that feel like it will be impossible to ever be ourselves. I want to show what social transition, HRT, and/or gender-affirming surgeries are capable of doing for us because I know that would have made a difference for me once upon a time.

    If you can reply or send me a direct message with your timeline or before/after images, and let me know whether you want your name/masto handle on it or if you would prefer to have no name/handle on it, I would really appreciate it! The piece in question will discuss a little bit of complicated history of the before/after transition images but then focus on the power of seeing how dynamic our bodies are and how much is possible through different kinds of transition. If you change your mind after sharing, I can always remove your images.

    Friendly PSA:

    When a loved one passes leaving you the role of Executor of the estate, and you're going through who to notify about the recent death,

    TELL THE BANK LAST!

    They will freeze the account immediately upon hearing of the death and the only way to unfreeze it is to go through probate, which will take at least a month.

    This is really important for things like online bill payments for utilities, mortgages, etc.

    Holy shit. I just talked a cis guy on the internet down from "Let kids be kids" and got him to see why gender-affirming care for teens absolutely cannot wait.

    Struggle post. Fair warning.

    So yesterday I had to cut off not one, but two people I'd been helping as they questioned/navigated early coming out to themselves because, in both cases, the person would not respect crucial boundaries I repeatedly articulated for their protection and mine. And like... I don't blame them for needing what I couldn't give. I'm not angry at them. They're new to all this, and figuring shit out is an incredibly emotionally-fraught time. Shit happens.

    Regardless of ones precise position, I want every single person who is talking about the need for "opt-in, not opt-out" with a bridge to take a moment and reflect on how we handle replies here in mastodon-land.

    Which is neither opt-in nor does it give you an opt-out.

    I can name a wide variety of features like that here, and I'd love to see more energy directed at those issues.

    We barely provide controls, or even guidance, around federation here and what we provide is not nuanced.

    @Impossible_PhD This is one of the pieces I struggle with most. I live in Iowa, which is literally taking pages from the Florida playbook wrt trans persecution. A big difference, though, is that FL has huge urban centers, full of people living their best queer lives. Iowa is incredibly rural, and that low-density population still outweighs our city centers. We don't have the numbers here.
    I feel like I'd be safer in Atlanta or Ft. Lauderdale than Iowa City. 😞
