OMG the anti-truck urbanists are going to go nuts for this one!

That normal car with snow on the hood looks like it has better visibility than the truck with its gigantic oversized hood height.

It’s no wonder that we’re seeing an increase in pedestrian fatalities with truck designs like these. https://www.npr.org/2023/11/14/1212737005/cars-trucks-pedestrian-deaths-increase-crash-data

Very cool to see so many local Mastodon servers here in the / region, on @jaz's great "Mastodon Near Me" map.

Also an excellent use of the "uMap" tool from the community!

I'm really excited that the famous @stamen map styles will continue to live on into the future, thanks to @stadiamaps! I've been helping to support these styles for a decade now and it's a relief to see them updated and refreshed for the next generation of map users. https://stamen.com/here-comes-the-future-of-stamen-maps/

I really don't know when you would need to do this, but I'm glad you can do this.

In the early years of Twitter there were so many cool apps built on geotagged tweets for use cases like disaster mapping. Also many beautiful maps of spatial patterns of social media from creative coders like Erica Fischer.

Gradually, though, people stopped using geotags in Twitter and nothing quite took its place.

But now with @Edent's work to implement "Foursquare on Mastodon" maybe a new geosocial age is dawning?

Interesting news-ish article about #HighSpeedRail in the #SeattleTimes sponsored by Microsoft.

https://www.seattletimes.com/sponsored/a-look-at-high-speed-rail-convenience-jobs-housing-and-cleaner-air/

I can't quibble with the content (it all holds water) and it's a good promotional summary of the topic.

The whole sponsored thing is a bit "ick", but whatever, newspapers aren't what they once were! And it's a nice counter to the regressive, anti-HSR editorials recently published in the Seattle Times.

I just stumbled upon another local instance similar to our own, right "next door" in the called https://sanjuans.life. Hello over there @jeff, @LeeOnOrcas, et al.! I also appreciate this line in their description: "Local conversation, globally federated with the rest of the world." Nice concise explanation of the concept of a local server. I might steal that!

Today is Point Elliott Treaty Day here in the northwest part of #WashingtonState, including #Seattle, #EverettWA, #BellinghamWA, & much of #PugetSound & the #SalishSea. On this day in 1855 the United States signed a treaty with representatives of local sovereign native nations that provides the legal foundation for all non-native settlement in this area, including ongoing legal obligations that we have to our #indigenous neighbors. Take a moment today to learn more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Point_Elliott

question: Does anyone have any pointers where I could learn more about the tagging of rivers in ? (Unfortunately, I don’t speak Japanese). Looks like there was an import that tagged too many features as "rivers" that should probably be “streams”, causing Japan to have way too much waterway density.

Here are screenshots of , Seattle, and Zurich all at zoom 10, showing how Japan has way more rivers than you'd expect at this zoom level.

A map of the Seattle area at zoom 10, showing nothing but water features from OpenStreetMap. Compared to Tokyo, there are many fewer rivers, and they are more evenly spaced across the landscape.

I used to use Google for occasional amateur drawings, and it was the perfect tool for what I needed to do. Not too powerful, not really for actual construction-quality designs, but just right for fleshing out ideas about building volume and interior floorplans. But Sketchup moved to Trimble a few years ago, the free version doesn't work anymore. Anyone have recommendations for another free tool I should use instead? Would learning be overkill for this use case?

A 3D Sketchup illustration I made a few years ago showing some interior floorplans, calling out the square footage of various rooms and the location of bathrooms, kitchens, etc. It's a very simplified, computer-graphics looking drawing but it's enough to get the idea of what a hypothetical floorplan might look like inside a building.

I have Opinions about conference name tags.

These name tags at State of the Map US are beautifully designed, but the name needs to be bigger! I have to get way too close to people to read their name.

Conference name tag modifications I always make:

  1. Tie some knots in the lanyard string to shorten it, otherwise nobody can see your name tag when you’re sitting at a table.

  2. Write your name on the back! Half the time your name tag will be turned around and you don’t know it.

2a. include a short-ish link where people can quickly look up your contact info!
