, (where I live) is studying whether our cities have enough room in their Urban Growth Areas to accommodate future population growth, and my eyes are glazing over trying to read this document called "Whatcom County Land Capacity Analysis For Permanent Housing and Employment Needs"...

Instead my mind keeps wandering back to this map I made comparing the city of (population 90k) with (population 400k) which have the same land area:

An important article from an old friend of mine from grad school.

"To Fight Antisemitism, We Need to Accurately Identify It. Too Often, We’re Failing." by Molly Kraft.

https://www.thegrindmag.ca/to-fight-antisemitism-need-to-accurately-identify-it-were-failing/

Anti-semitism is real, and it is growing. But criticism of the state of Israel is not inherently antisemitic no matter how many times supporters of Israel try to claim it is.

The Biden administration is planning to veto another Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire tomorrow morning. Please contact the White House, and you could also write directly to the US ambassador to the UN. Ask them to vote for the resolution or resign in protest if they won't go against Biden's wishes. Ultimately being against a ceasefire means supporting further war crimes; that's more than enough reason to vote yes against Biden's orders, or resign.

In : "Israeli settlements stand in the way of peace. Biden can defund them all"

Interesting idea! The Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are so extensive I'd pretty much given up hope they could be dismantled (unlike the much smaller ones in Gaza that were withdrawn in 2005). With the those in place, a viable two-state solution seems like a non-starter. But maybe this move could be a path forward if Biden has the courage to act on it?

From Amnesty International: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2024/02/israel-opt-new-evidence-of-unlawful-israeli-attacks-in-gaza-causing-mass-civilian-casualties-amid-real-risk-of-genocide/

^^ Note, these are some examples of bombings in that happened in the last couple of months while Rafah was still a safe zone, before the new wave of intense bombing that began yesterday. Most civilian casualties in will never get this level of detailed analysis by a respected, impartial international organization like Amnesty International. Whether you think they are the exception or the norm, they're still war crimes.

So I've been using 5Calls.org to make it easy to call my federal representatives (although now I just saved all the numbers as contacts in my phone so I don't use the app much anymore).

But since @resistbot is on Mastodon (and 5Calls is not) I was thinking maybe I should start encouraging people to use that instead?

Does anyone have a preference between 5Calls and Resistbot, in terms of which one I should be nagging my friends and family to use?

The epic linguistic map came up in conversation at work today, so today is one of those days to regularly to pause and spend some time admiring this map of North American English dialects by Rick Aschmann:

Great article in the Salish Current explaining tribal sovereignty in and the 50th anniversary of the Boldt Decision that upheld native treaty rights.

Interesting news-ish article about #HighSpeedRail in the #SeattleTimes sponsored by Microsoft.

https://www.seattletimes.com/sponsored/a-look-at-high-speed-rail-convenience-jobs-housing-and-cleaner-air/

I can't quibble with the content (it all holds water) and it's a good promotional summary of the topic.

The whole sponsored thing is a bit "ick", but whatever, newspapers aren't what they once were! And it's a nice counter to the regressive, anti-HSR editorials recently published in the Seattle Times.

In the early years of Twitter there were so many cool apps built on geotagged tweets for use cases like disaster mapping. Also many beautiful maps of spatial patterns of social media from creative coders like Erica Fischer.

Gradually, though, people stopped using geotags in Twitter and nothing quite took its place.

But now with @Edent's work to implement "Foursquare on Mastodon" maybe a new geosocial age is dawning?

Great news that the tool is now under the management of a worker-owned software coop called Cohere! OpaVote is an easy-to-use website that lets you host online. I can't count how many elections I've administered via this excellent tool as part of my advocacy for democratic reforms like and in particular. Congrats to @Zee, @anaulin and the team!

Today is Point Elliott Treaty Day here in the northwest part of #WashingtonState, including #Seattle, #EverettWA, #BellinghamWA, & much of #PugetSound & the #SalishSea. On this day in 1855 the United States signed a treaty with representatives of local sovereign native nations that provides the legal foundation for all non-native settlement in this area, including ongoing legal obligations that we have to our #indigenous neighbors. Hey Washington State residents: the "Washington VOICES Act", HB 2250, has a hearing in the legislature in less than a week! We need you to sign in "pro" in favor of this bill to show your support to the State Government Committee. Please do it before January 24! It's quick and easy:

OMG the anti-truck urbanists are going to go nuts for this one!

That normal car with snow on the hood looks like it has better visibility than the truck with its gigantic oversized hood height.

It’s no wonder that we’re seeing an increase in pedestrian fatalities with truck designs like these. https://www.npr.org/2023/11/14/1212737005/cars-trucks-pedestrian-deaths-increase-crash-data
