Trying to get my head around the GenAI APIs popping up all over lately. What's a good use-case for wrapping calls to ChatGPT in your own application?

For instance, the Spring AI's for calling various LLMs. Seems like you could make cool party tricks of creating poems, maybe creating content for your marketing, maybe images based off your data... But is any of it useful?

https://docs.spring.io/spring-ai/reference/api/chatclient.html

alanb,
@alanb@hachyderm.io avatar

@jeffsheets and Hadoop 5 years before that, and Y2K before that and .... I suspect that in 3-4 years the hype for easy money for the new tech that will fix everything will have moved on to something else, and the usable functionality will remain.

It never will cease to amaze that there’s a maker of smartphones emphasizing privacy and pushing end-to-end encryption and features like device lockdown, running on an open source OS…

…and open source tech people keep dunking on Apple and dissing it and then turn around and praise Google, the shadiest advertising company in the world that would sell their grandmother for a quick profit (they probably do).

alanb,
@alanb@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs iOS is not end to end encrypted, unless by the other end they mean their NC data center, where they do the same profiling and selling of that as Google. AOSP is enough open source that GrapheneOS and Lineage can exist, unlike iOS. And with GrapheneOS, I can get my content to and from my Linux Mint , which is what finally drove me off iPhones.

alanb,

dianshuo, to random

@vertigo random thing. Before VSCode came along I used to use Sublime. It was a little rougher around the edges in some areas of the experience but it was practically the same. Including the command palette keybindings. Only difference was that it wasn’t built on electron and was a tiny (relative) C++ app from memory. Maybe need to go back to that…

kellogh, to python
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

hot take: dynamic languages like and would benefit a lot by a little type checking around async/await constructs — simply emitting a compiler error (or even a warning) when you don’t await an async function call would save massive amounts of time

alanb,
@alanb@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh I use mypy and ruff, which complain about data types among other things when I miss an await. The challenge with them I'm having is getting them running reliably, but that's a VS Code on Windows problem.

alanb,
@alanb@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh I agree with you that it would be very nice for that functionality to be lower/earlier/more enforceable in the development process. Even with our coding standards requiring their use, or junior devs didn't, and it took a while for me to clean up the mess.

cdlhamma, to ai
@cdlhamma@hachyderm.io avatar

Its actually insane how out of control companies are with implementing just to say that they have AI. is all over the place, no matter how dumb the implementation. Watching literally everyone under the sun trip over themselves to implement it just because.

alanb,
@alanb@hachyderm.io avatar

@cdlhamma I read recently someone has declared big data dead, but this rush to implement AI looks to me as exactly the same thing as the rush to implement Hadoop 10 years ago: buzzword compliance. So is anyone taking bets on whether someone says AI is dead in 10 years? My guess is it will be around under the covers like BD is today, which is a lot like COBOL is still around under the covers decades after its supposed demise.
