The extraordinary situation that the Met police - the Met police! - are more liberal than the government.

dianshuo,

@davidallengreen one might also argue they are actually upholding the law and the democratic institution. Which is a welcome direction considering their recent issues.

That Braverman column.

Either it is consequential (in that she is sacked) or it is significant (in what it tells us about a government which does not sack her).

I know little about Israel/Palestine/Gaza (and so am not commentating on that directly) but I do know something about Ireland, and that column is unacceptable.

dianshuo,

@davidallengreen as time goes on it becomes hard to avoid the spectre of wilful or deliberate ignorance. Either way I would say a lot of her actions of late are entirely unacceptable including the recent attempts to influence policing via public lambast. Sadly the PM appears to be behaving in the same way.

When I visited China in 2015, every motorbike and scooter in Beijing was already electric.
If people are surprised that China is now dominating the market for decent, low cost electric cars, they haven't been paying attention.
It's the American car manufacturers who, once again, have had to be dragged kicking and screaming into innovation and doing the right thing.

dianshuo,

@petergleick or the German manufacturers that need “protecting”.

Certain London bus routes appear to be using new electric buses from BYD and frankly this is a huge improvement.

Global competition creates and protects jobs. But it must be fair.

President von der Leyen unveiled bold steps to ensure fair play, free and safe trade at :

  • We launched an anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles from China, whose prices are kept artificially low.

  • From 🇯🇵 to 🇺🇸, we will work with our partners to cut our reliance on single suppliers for critical materials.

  • By year's end, we should finalise trade agreements with 🇦🇺, 🇲🇽 and Mercosur – 🇮🇳 and 🇮🇩 coming next.

dianshuo,

@EU_Commission we call that protectionism. Making electric cars unaffordable is not a good look.

@vertigo random thing. Before VSCode came along I used to use Sublime. It was a little rougher around the edges in some areas of the experience but it was practically the same. Including the command palette keybindings. Only difference was that it wasn’t built on electron and was a tiny (relative) C++ app from memory. Maybe need to go back to that…

    dianshuo,

Just come across an 'academic' paper which cites other papers, and then at the bottom says:

    References Available from the Authors

You have to request the bibliography(!)

    dianshuo,

@pwaring I recall there was a row at one time with certain academic publishers on this. That said it would also be a way of tracking interest or generating sales leads (depends on your paper).
