  • alinanorakari,

@maddy yeah I've watched Liz play it on stream and it did look pretty lenient regarding that. Honestly nice that they removed that aspect of micro management in favor of other difficulty factors

So the few times I've been to the US - once to California (which admittedly is different, on vacation rather than work), once to Corpus Christi, once to Arkansas (near Memphis) - I found myself boggling at how much open asphalt there was between stores.

I wondered if it was just because they had the space to expand, so they just did. It didn't occur to me that there were minimum parking rules. It was always very easy to park. Everywhere looked sort of empty/unpopular.

    alinanorakari,

@sarajw oh no, that's terrible. I had assumed the asphalt situation could be offset by smarter city planning with fewer stroads and public transport closer to the businesses (or businesses in city centers) but this throws a whole new wrench into the works

    alinanorakari,

    @sarajw hey … spoilers. j/k that's good to know

The Icelandic translation for the Windows image editor uses the word for free as in free beer, not as in freeform image cropping for freeform image cropping.

    alinanorakari,

@alda I love when the translators get the localization strings without enough context, or when a developer thinks they can reuse a translation because surely it must be the same word in the other language, too. Some of those can be a fun puzzle to figure out

    alinanorakari,

@sv1 @alda I liked the “close” button that was translated with a phrase meaning “nearby”

I stumbled across a YouTube video with “Warning Deceased Christian" in the title and it was of this Australian family dressing their dead mother for her resurrection. Confused I checked out the channel and they have been documenting the wait for her resurrection as promised by god.

So the husband set up a continuously filming camera next to her bed where the dead body lies in the hopes of literally capturing god raising her from the dead …

    alinanorakari,

... the following video titles tell a baffling story of grief along the lines of “24h later. waiting for the promise”, "what will happen to her at 2pm?", “her body is still resting on the bed”, “at the crematorium, pray for her resurrection one last time”

He believes so hard that she will come back, so much so that they unscrewed the lid of the coffin in the crematorium, shouting “in the name of Jesus, sit up”. It's bone-chilling and frankly unsettling.

    alinanorakari,

@sarajw I need an “Hey YouTube, can you pretend for the algorithm that I never watched this?” button

    alinanorakari,

@sarajw ah yeah the “I know your kind! have this” algorithm moment

I just noticed that when my laptop is working hard macOS turns down the fan temporarily when I start a dictation so it can hear me better. That is pretty cool.

Is there a name for the category that contains vehicles that are traditionally muscle-powered but also their electrically assisted versions? Like bicycles, various forms of cargo bikes …

For example I think an electric cargo bike with three wheels is bot strictly a “bicycle” simply duebto number of wheels, but it feels like it’s in the same group of things overall.

Otoh a fully electric scooter (the Vespa-style) doesn’t feel like it’s in there. It’s clearly a motor vehicle.

    alinanorakari,

    @esther or maybe simply "cycles”

So what type of colonizing did your family do?

    alinanorakari,

@BlackAzizAnansi since I live in central Europe and both families have been in this country for many generations I hope not a lot. We suspect a few more remotely related ancestors moved to the US, likely Pennsylvania, but we have no records to prove it.

figured out that it's entirely possible to tell my game "forget all that game crap, you're now a debug editor" and it said "ok" and when I said "ok, go back to being a game again" it did without crashing

very excited for the possibilities with this

Apropos of nothing, one observation I’ve heard people who used to be involved in labour negotiations here in Iceland is “people with American brain worms don’t know how to negotiate with unions”

(Paraphrasing, since the original is always in Icelandic.)

This is noticable in that you can guess with reasonable certainty, which company is run by an executive trained in the US just by how badly they are handling union contract negotiations

    alinanorakari,

@baldur that sounds alarming … I know the US is bad but I didn't know the thinking was this infectious

People have said that GPT-4 is much better and also that numbers are hard for GPT-3.5
I've seen this today, which is GPT-4 struggling with words (a lilac avatar means it is GPT-4)

My point remains: Be skeptical of GPT's output if the answer is of a topic you can’t adequately verify.
