I work with an #IndigenousLanguage community in the US on developing #languageTech. I am learning to improve my #coding and I want to know everything about your languages and your #pets. Out for a solo nature bimble from the gîte. Lots of lovely wildlife and flowers, nothing very eventful until I stopped to say bonjour to some sheeps and lambs. They were quite noisy so I started to video them…then became aware of heavy feets thundering towards me…

I know that these guard dogs can clear fences if they think their flock is threatened, so I made a hasty exit. Luckily he stopped and sat down and only eyed me suspiciously as I admired from a safer distance! 😅

I’ve been using @xubuntu for like ten years now and it’s awesome.

If you’re disturbed by the changes they’re making to Windows—as you rightfully should be—consider trying either Ubuntu or Xubuntu.

Most things most people do on the computer have free alternatives. And the things that don’t, the infrastructure is a lot better than it used to be.

If the primary things you do are Word and Internet, you probably won’t notice anything but a performance boost.

not one, not two, but three butterfly species visited me, and two of them gave me the stare: a Red Admiral and a Small White. The third one - a male Orange Tip - was too busy flitting about to look around.

The English verb 'to wade' is closely related to Romance verbs forms such as Italian 'vado' (I go), French 'va' (goes) and Spanish 'vamos' (we go).

These come from the Latin verb 'vādere' (to go). Most forms of this verb don't survive in the Romance languages, but some of its present tense forms were lent to the mixed bags of the Romance verbs for "to go".

Thanks to @ingalls for the reminder that May 18 is the anniversary of the Mt St Helens eruption (1980), and it's worth marking that day.

We had moved from Yakima to Wenatchee a few years earlier, so got the reports of 'darkness at noon' by phone from my grandma who was still there.

This ⬇️ is a US Forest Service photo, taken at 1:30PM on Yakima Avenue, Yakima WA, on May 18 as the ash cloud passed through.

I was a bit younger and in central California and we had ash falling. I think I remember it being darker out too but that may have been as the ash moved and not directly due to the initial eruption.

@amyfou My grandparents were in Yakima visiting my great aunt and found out about the eruption when the priest ran into the church covered in ash and told everyone to go home. They also talked about how crazy dark it was in the middle of the day.
I've still got a jar of ash my grandpa collected in my garage somewhere.

@amyfou I don't know if they still do it, but when I lived in Portland in the early '90s, the lodge gift shop at Multnomah Falls sold souvenir tchotchkes made with ash. It seemed a bit macabre to me at the time.

@amyfou I was living in Idaho at the time, parts of which got coated. I still have this souvenir baggie of ash that one of the local fast food joints was handing out with a meal purchase.

@amyfou At the time I live in Marin County, which is on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. We had a lot of ash fall, which was amazing considering the distance, and I know it fell much further away. It was quite the memorable experience.

Popping into the month of #MeMade with a #DogsOfMastodon make!

Pup's new red collar was whipped up by me this afternoon with material and hardware that had been salvaged from broken items. The clasps and D ring came from a puppy carrier that didn't last and the material was a strap on a reusable bag with a short lifespan. Anything that breaks, if I can't repair it, I salvage whatever I can for future projects.

Quite pleased with this! A quick and satisfying make! The other day I also made a big pillow, hemmed a blanket, and I sewed a headlamp onto my waist pack belt for an upcoming race. I will still wear a headlamp but it's nice to have a backup that lights up the ground right in front of me without looking down.

We had the early SniffBook walkies. But she already wanted a buggy walk...
Our friend and their dog will join us for a walk around 8. But we probably won't be able to do the water walk...
Sooooo in order to keep my gall happy, I'm gonna squeeze in buggy walkies as well. If all goes well, we'll have an hour rest then before the next walk 😂.
Which means we'll head to the shed soon and start our way...
If the weather gets worse throughout the day, she should be good enough with short walks I hope...

Sooooo, let's hit the loo and then get Arwen and myself ready for the buggy walk. I guess I'll get my steps in again today... 😇
