It has now been more than two years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In this video I give an optimistic and a pessimistic scenario for what will happen in year three. They are very different, and that shows the spectrum of possible outcomes. Nothing is decided yet, and it really could go either way. https://youtu.be/bJK5NYxGNOQ

If you defect from Russia with a stolen military helicopter, you should probably keep a low profile.

Vlad Vexler says that he does not like reaction videos where the theme is something like “Vlad Vexler destroyes Peter Zeihan", because it's not productive. And then he goes on to absolutely ripping Peter Zeihan apart in this video about .
It's worth watching if you want to understand the criticism of Navalny about nationalism, his position on , etc.

Has anyone seen Sokolov or heard anything about which position he will have now? It puzzles me that serious sources keep reporting on his firing without addressing the question of him being reported dead since September.

If the U.S. will play a smaller role in European security going forward, we need to have a conversation about nuclear weapons. The current UK and French arsenals are not sufficient to deter Russia, but the big question is if the solution is to grow their stockpiles, or if more countries need to join the nuclear club.

(The fact that this is now a discussion just goes to show the shortsightedness of American isolationalism.)

Russians got their hands on some Starlink terminals, so now both sides in the war use this technology. https://www.defenseone.com/threats/2024/02/russia-using-spacexs-starlink-satellite-devices-ukraine-sources-say/394080/

Shocker. Nadezhdin won't be allowed to run in Russia's presidential election ritual.

I see a large number of people saying that Russian anti-war presidential candidate Boris Nadezhdin is a Kremlin asset to legitimate Putin’s reelection. That is not the case. They allowed him to collect signatures for that reason but his campaign has gained much more traction than they are comfortable with.

Can a war between Russia and NATO really happen within the next few years? Recently there have been several warnings from politicians and high-level military leaders. In this video I discuss what on earth they are talking about, and what such a war might look like. And I think it's an important discussion, because the risk is bigger than many people assume.

Interesting project: A Baltic Defense Line. I guess the lesson from the Maginot Line is not to let Belgium decide where to have a weak spot.

Important video from Ryan McBeth: Why is the New York Times so often wrong about military issues?
My own observations are similar. It’s a problem in our news coverage that so few journalists understand questions. These are issues that make world headlines, yet many news organizations don't employ journalists with a deep enough understanding to ask the right questions.

This story about the Danish F-16s to Ukraine being delayed is getting annoying. It’s a non-story. The prime minister said in August that she hoped the planes could be delivered before new year, but quickly thereafter it was clarified that spring was the realistic time. There is no new delay, just this original one.

The YouTube channel Reporting from Ukraine is taking some time off for a New Year vacation, but fortunately there are other good sources of information. This video from Torsten Heinrich is packed with useful information and a great overview of the frontline situation.

It has been a really bad week for the Russian air force, that has lost five fighter jets. There is a lot of speculation that Ukraine is using the Patriot air defense system in an offensive role, but I just want to throw out there that this might also be what a surprise appearance by F-16 would look like…

With this news story making the rounds, it’s important that people keep the difference between a ceasefire and a peace deal in mind. I think it’s likely that Putin would like a ceasefire during the presidential election in Russia, but it’s not likely that he is ready to accept a peace deal at this point.

Too bad. I think Duntsova’s bid for president was interesting. It’s an example of how opposition figures in Russia can appear out of nowhere, and Putin’s regime has to be constantly on guard.

This week, both Blinken and Stoltenberg reiterated the notion that has already lost in because they failed to achieve their original goals.
This is the kind of dangerous narrative that I talk about in this video. We have to stop talking about the war in terms where it sounds like Ukraine has already won.

Ukraine ramps up domestic defense production, now for 155 mm ammunition. It will take time before this works, but that is one of the reasons why we should expect Ukraine to mainly focus on defensive operations for the time being. https://euromaidanpress.com/2023/12/08/minister-ukraine-to-partner-with-us-firms-to-produce-155mm-shells-domestically/
