so many games made in Unity/GameMaker/etc that only have a Windows version on Steam, and no Mac and Linux. I know Mac complicates things with the notarization thing, but what about Linux? Thought commercial engines major selling point was cross-platform capabilities.

andykorth,
@andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink for us adding Linux meant getting working versions of the native plugins which was a bit of a chore. But we did it anyway at some point. Surprised I haven’t seen more mention of native code plugins here with unity.

@djlink Yup. God forbid you do something like me and change import settings on videos and every team members has to wait 2 hours to transcode them all. 😬

First experiment with Hugo wasn't too good. First template I picked doesn't work, eventually found a github issues page with half a dozen people also unable to use it. Second hugo theme was missing an installation step (found the fix on an old closed github issue). Then it required go and npm, where it installed 480 packages (!) warned me that the module wasn't compatible with the latest Hugo version, then after 7000 ms of build time, it failed to render the "taxonomy".

andykorth,
@andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@erin_catto @slembcke I'm still a little hopeful... gonna try the default template and see if I can at least get something building. Then maybe try to find something that fits better.

Wordpress has been waaay to heavy. My old site was just "php include a header and a footer". but it's aged poorly in a variety of ways.

damn look at that load speed difference, left is Wordpress and right is new static website.

@djlink Wow nice! Did you use one of those static site generator tools? I've been thinking of redoing my page with one. (maybe hugo?)

@djlink Oops I see you mentioned Hugo earlier! Sorry I missed that!

    @bitinn is the difference in selected and desired keywords a result of a platform specific feature? Renderer (metal vs Vulcan vs dx11 in the editor?). Is Unity picking an unexpected quality setting for the build that results in different variants chosen on the device? Just guesses!

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @bitinn yeah since the correct variant exists and wasn’t stripped out, then what makes the choice wrong in those instances? That seems to leave stuff like LODs influencing variant choice..? Or material shenanigans. Do the variants have helpful names? (Like what are the keywords it seems to be getting wrong?)

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @bitinn yeah that’s pretty mysterious. Sounds like you are much deeper into the shader keywords than I ever got. I know for us the most common issues are problems with bugs with materials getting copied/not copied in nonobvious ways when people mix sharedMaterial and .material calls. Especially at editor time! But that’s our unique problem 😁

    In the Unity Assets window, what does a blue box with one gray side and tape across the top mean? I can't find an explanation via search (inside or outside of Unity's documentation) or asking ChatGPT.

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @peterdrake I think that’s a non-prefab that has prefab like behavior. You can’t unpack it. Usually it’s a transform hierarchy imported as part of a mesh. It has prefab like behavior in that the object will update if the source asset changes. Not sure if it has a name.

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Nifflas I assume that if I choose 75%, I get more thinking in per minute. If my thoughts slow down by the same amount that time and thinking have slowed down together and perhaps there is no net experience change. So then I get a “thoughts per minute” bonus!

    A $15 microtransaction horse on WoW made more money than StarCraft 2. No wonder companies are betting so much on micro transactions. People complain but apparently it takes tons of money

    @djlink maybe this is why I haven’t heard anything about StarCraft 3

    I sorta get why long, well-manicured nails are supposed to be a symbol of virility for attraction, but anyone who has nails longer than, like, an inch or two, (especially if they're fake) is just advertising how completely useless they see themselves. Why else would they so handicap their own primary tools for worldly manipulation?

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @LouisIngenthron I think the message is that they are so well off that they can make a living without the use of their hands. (Like having hands with no calluses or (in ages past) no sun tan from working in a field)

    Folks, if you believe the backpedal, you need to- sit with your feelings a sec, because. Heh.

    Nobody deletes a git repo for "low views." don't delete anything unless someone tells them to / they need to, because, why would you? It costs nothing to just leave it there. Unless.

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @glassbottommeg I don’t believe for a second that they even measured the views of a git repo!

    garretpolk, to unity
    @garretpolk@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    Why doesn't Unity :unity: just charge per unit sold? It's already tracked 100% and can be accounted for when budgeting? Isn't this much much easier than attempting to track installs??? No DRM, pirate copies, charity copies can be accounted for, etc.

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @Nifflas @garretpolk I agree, I think they are chasing the mobile market in particular. If it’s a revenue share they will rely on developers accurately reporting revenue and that’s tough for them to guess at especially for micro transaction based games. Hence why their current plan involves them guessing at install counts and sending bills.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1njIDuf69zxyM661_RBq2Wr9L4DOEcwb-lBbuMp6ylm0/edit#gid=0

    That looks frightening.

    Please consider @godotengine

    andykorth,
    @andykorth@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @gamingonlinux It's actually a bit worse than that because if you sell a million copies, they aren't all billed at the lower rate, the first 100k are billed at the higher rate first, then the excess is billed at the next tier's lower rate.

    andykorth,

    @djlink usually just one, but when we had a wwise project it was helpful to have that separate because any single individual usually wants the unity project or the wwise project but not both.

    I'm having a bit of a weird thing here

    void A()
    {
    }
    void B()
    {
    A();
    }

    A(); // does the thing
    B(); // doesn't do the thing

    I run the debugger and A is called, and nothing else is done in B, inputs the same, outputs the same.
    Yet the program behaves differently ⁉️

    @AngryAnt @Igigog @logicalerror Fun anecdote: Someone I know has two copies of the project checked out. Opens one project in the ide/editor, then opens the other one in the terminal, where he builds / launches the app. Definitely has happened more than once!

    peterdrake, to unity
    @peterdrake@qoto.org avatar

    It's a common practice in Unity to start the name of a scene, prefab, etc. with an underscore so it will be listed first in the project window.

    This is because things are sorted lexicographically and underscores come before letters in ASCII, right?

    Well, no.

    https://www.asciitable.com/

    So what the heck is Unity using to sort things? Did they ... did they really add the underscore as a special case?
