Auschwitz is a place that shows where hatred, antisemitism and contempt for a fellow man led people decades ago.

11 August 1936 | Dutch Jewish boy, Benjamin Wolff, was born in Sittard.

In September 1943 he was deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz. He was murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

5 November 1940 | A Dutch Jewish boy, Martijn Franklin Altmann, was born in The Hague.

In March 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz from Westerbork and murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

19 August 1942 | A transport of 997 Jews deported from Drancy arrived at Auschwitz. After the selection 897 of them were immediately murdered in gas chambers.

One of them was Fanny Brauch from Paris.
She was 15 years old.

27 October 1940 | Dutch Jewish girl, Henderika Leman, was born in Zwolle.

She was deported to Auschwitz from Westerbork in November 1942 with her younger brother Meijer and her mother Annette. They were all murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

In 1942 she was deported to from Mechelen / Malines. She did not survive.

6 November 1942 | A Hungarian Jewish girl, Valeria Heiman, was born in Satoraljaujhely to Géza and Sári.

In May 1944 she was deported to Auschwitz and murdered in a gas chamber.

7 October 1944 | Jewish prisoners of the Sonderkommando at the German Nazi camp Auschwitz II-Birkenau organized a revolt. They set crematorium IV on fire, causing serious damage, as well as attacked the SS men in the vicinity. 1/5

A heartbreaking moment that was saved by an SS photographer at Auschwitz II-Birkenau during the deportations of Hungarian Jews. It was taken 80 years ago, most likely in late May 1944. A little child finds a dandelion in the grass and is handing it or showing it to an older boy.
