The vast majority of “business” books can best be categorised as notes on winning a lottery. You’ll get a good deal more value from biographies, history books or a good novel.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan There is most likely a lot more value in academic research papers about business, than in the self-help type of business books. Sadly most of the research is behind expensive paywalls, so that even business book writers don't pay to get proper source materials.

Send Later should be a built in option for every app that can send or post. Texting. Social media. All the things.

Can’t believe out of all the modern apps it’s just humble Mail that has this built in.

autiomaa,

@ethanschoonover Delayed email sending is also possible with Google Mail web client application. Screenshot of the message scheduling dialog from it is somewhat similar to Apple Mail, just with a bit more details.

A friend was telling me about guidelines for developing and deploying new services in their company, and one of the guidelines is “new services must not use .”

I’m not making this up, and this isn’t hyperbole. They actually have this listed on their company documentation.

@ramsey Have heard similar at several places. Companies were migrating away from PHP around 5-6 years ago.

It's rare that I see an Instagram ad that’s worthwhile, but I have been struggling with how to take photos of reflective things without a full-on studio setup. This translucent cone is a huge winner from V-Flat World: https://vflatworld.com/collections/the-light-cone-karl-taylor First photo is Peanuts comic in sleeve; second is viewing through cone; 3rd and 4th are photos through cone—single light source. The site recommends using inexpensive desk lamps on either side for evenness. (Not a paid endorsement!)

@ai6yr @glennf Really liking this. Much simpler setup for photographing reflective items. Back in 2006 was learning studio photography, and would have been happy to learn this trick back then. We used large styrofoam plates as reasonably cheap reflectors, but there were always some spots that couldn't be covered.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr @glennf We also had black styrofoam plates (that were painted) to make for a softer reflections on studio. Same material can be used to both increase and decrease amount of light.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr @glennf Large sheets of paper are sometimes the cheapest reflectors, but might not last that long.

Firefox Nightly gets an improved screenshot tool. Do other desktop browsers have something like this?

https://blog.nightly.mozilla.org/2024/03/11/a-better-screenshots-tool-and-more-these-weeks-in-firefox-issue-156/

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@simevidas Screenshot preview features on Firefox are rather different from other browsers.

Though I do like how Vivaldi screenshot tool works, as it is always available via button on the browser's window border. Vivaldi remembers the last screenshot tool mode (Selection / Full page) so it will automatically give that by default.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@simevidas True, it's also possible. Firefox has great element selection feature on the screenshot tool, compared to Chromium-based Vivaldi.

UI element positions are a bit more compact on Vivaldi though, as it's closer to the screen center.

I was very impressed with how easy makes it to claim a domain name handle.

I uploaded a small text file to .well-known and my account is now "@edent.tel"

I'm not convinced that is brilliant - but Mastodon server providers could learn from the simplicity of getting a personalised domain up and running.

https://bsky.social/about/blog/4-28-2023-domain-handle-tutorial

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent Yeah, the domain setup on Bluesky works really nicely. It's even better when done with DNS, as that way websites don't need any modifications (that might break with the CMS changes).

Really wish that there would be similar account alias features possible in the future also for Mastodon users.

Well that there are some places in the world that have half time zones. That is they are 30 minutes ahead of the next time zone.

I have a MS Teams meeting with some folks in India coming up. I couldn't figure out why the meeting invite had their local time shown at the half hour mark when it's on my calendar at the top of the hour.

mike, to random
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

Something I've come to realize lately is, at least in technology circles, it's not uncommon for authors of articles I read and developers of applications I use to have Mastodon accounts. I realize Mastodon still hasn't broken into Meta or X numbers, but it's gratifying to see even this level of success.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@mike And even if writers don't use Mastodon actively, it's good that many have it as a placeholder for future.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@mike That also goes the other way. There are tons of negativity towards other services, and people keep being pushed out of Mastodon because of that negativity. While every service have different downsides, people probably should focus more on the possibilities and positive sides of collaboration tools. Even if something is ads funded, it doesn't make it acceptable to blame people for using those services.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@mike I was avoiding Bluesky for a long time because people on Mastodon told it was awful and horrible platform. But after trying out it a few weeks, realized that a lot of the negativity was unrealistic, as every service adjusts based on what people follow. Have been having some of the most positive conversations in years there (in the past few months), while I still keep using two Mastodon accounts.

It's not a competition, but a collaboration.

demofox, to random
@demofox@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I think in the future we won't filter AI vs non AI made content, we'll just filter useful (Eg factually based) vs not. That axis is not strictly ai vs not.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@demofox For sure, summarized information (of different kinds of viewpoints) is often better than a view of edges. Lots of time people get polarized by content written by humans, and while there are real risks of automatically generated content, it could become more trustworthy if different kinds of data/information sources are ranked and balanced more carefully. We most likely need more open knowledge ranking models, to open up how search and information discovery works in a larger scale.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@demofox I think biggest issue is that when ranking algorithms are hidden (and carefully protected), people lose trust to how knowledge summaries are produced. At least, if the key weighting parameters would become more visible, it might improve the amount of trust towards computer generated information summarization (and "AI", whatever it might be).

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@demofox A bit over a decade ago, I was following few research projects that did data-driven journalism about war and conflict zones. Key difference to regular news gathering was that they did summaries of what was happening on a large scale. Data sources were individual articles and interviews etc., and those were displayed on a zoomable world map. That made the overall complexity of openly published news (from 3rd party sources) a lot more easier to understand (on a larger scale).
