Modern-day web development is so complicated. What the hell happened over the past 10 years.

Why do I need Node.js just to edit some CSS? :thonking:

And when did SASS become SCSS?

Ok, I give up.... too much catching up to do :hurb:

Surprise. The mere compliance with cybersecurity standards does not mean there are no cybersecurity issues. Treating such standards as check-box audit excercise is insufficient. But that’s how it’s often done. Including for compliance. https://josiahdykstra.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/NDSS2020_Compliance_Cautions.pdf

@LukaszOlejnik If food package contents would be audited as little as most companies' information security systems, people would have tons of more health issues. There's really a great need for more testing of systems.

The best, funniest thing about Bernstein's crusade against NIST's selection of CRYSTALS-Kyber for post-quantum key exchange is that if NIST had selected Bernstein's own submission, then, by his own logic, he should trust it less: it would be an indication NSA had secretly broken it.

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@tqbf As much as he has done things in the past, it's difficult to see how one person could always be better than a team effort of many skilled people.

When looking at the https://pq-crystals.org/kyber/resources.shtml page, there are at least 10 authors for the specification document. Constant review process while co-authoring something as complex as that system must generally be more trustworthy, than individual doing things alone.

Every blog hosted on Wordpress dot com now is enabled to post not just to the web, but to the social web (fediverse) too! All you need to do is install the free ActivityPub plugin and activate the feature. Your blog's domain name is automatically a social address and can be followed by any Mastodon or other fedi user. Couldn't be much simpler - no faffing about with IFTTT or any other third party services.

@osma Most likely WordPress integration will grow a lot larger than Mastodon service amount, because it's a lot cheaper to start (in comparison to having a full system to maintain).

autiomaa,

@osma Few friends have been using the original WordPress ActivityPub plugin for a longer time, and it's rather useful for marketing automation use. Less need for manually posting about having published something new.

October 12, 2011: iCloud launched ☁️

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@BasicAppleGuy Comparison to Google accounts is very much relevant, as those current have 15 GB of storage for the non-paid accounts. That amount has also been growing during the past decade, though I don't remember what it was back in 2011.

There are technical implementation differences in how that works, compared to iCloud, but the amount is easy to compare.

"Each Google Account includes 15 GB of storage, which is shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos."

    I wanted to consolidate a few thoughts on google, misinformation, large language models, enshittification, and the fate of the web as we know it.

    It started when Carl Zimmer shared this remarkable example of Google being fooled by machine-generated bullshit online.

    autiomaa,
    @autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

    @jonny @eloquence @ct_bergstrom Some years ago one professional sports player asked for help, because Google was broadcasting personal details of his family in the auto-generated snippets. He had tried to contact Google, but didn't have any luck with that. He was stressed out that relationship details (completely unrelated to work) were shown to anyone who searched his name. Google didn't care.

    @rolle Interestingly, that server amount is a lot larger than what Mastodon's official numbers show. Started wondering if there is a way to subscribe to block lists on Mastodon, in a similar way that adblocking works on web browsers.

    Basically, there are several types of lists that would be useful:

    • Keyword-based lists of topics to mute/hide/block.
    • Account-based lists of known trolls.
    • Server-based lists of harmful servers that should be disconnected/blocked from the feeds.
    autiomaa,
    @autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

    @jonikorpi For sure, it's not exactly easy to agree, but there are ways to merge frequent signals together. Automated text analysis, server reputation, account age, amount of messages, etc. tell a lot. Basically similar things that Twitter used to use for spam/abuse filtering before that side stopped being done.

    And yes, it can be expensive, but even more expensive is when nothing is done.

    OS devs: please provide regularly-refreshed install images/ISOs with your cumulative updates between major releases.

    I don't love downloading your entire multi-GB OS image just to have to wait for hours for all the updates to the OS and included apps to download and install.

    Also, security updates! If CVEs have been fixed since your release, you're shipping known-insecure software, expecting a user to install all updates before they do anything on the web.
