“Hey—you don’t know me but here’s a quick trauma dump you didn’t ask for to help start your morning” — unsolicited Democratic Party donation texts

@mathowie It's a drag that I have to remember how to make a new one of these every time a political text makes it past my iOS automations, but they've worked pretty well for me:

An automation in iOS Shortcuts: * Receive messages as input * Set variable

I know some fediverse apps use various text/image detection technologies, so I was curious if this encourages the use of alt text.

The main thing I learned: Out of nearly 30,000 fediverse posts I looked at, almost 80% did not have information about the client app.

That was a bit surprising. And it makes doing this sort of analysis difficult.

@boogah@simian.rodeo avatar

@stefan AFAIK, the closest that Ivory comes to using AI/ML for alt text is the inbuilt iOS photo feature (Live Text) that'll detect words in an image and copy them over to the image description.

(Daily user of Ivory here.)

Today I learned about Project 4K77, a fan lead project to scan and restore the the original 35mm prints of Star Wars: A New Hope. https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/project-4k77/

That same team has also released 4K80, a restored version of the original 35mm prints of Empire Strikes Back. https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/project-4k80/
Thanks @genex for the info.

@docpop There's 4K83, as well! And all three are great!

Me: I never eat frozen food!

Also me: I love yoshinoya frozen gyudon!

I’ve now changed my mind to accept culturally relevant frozen food

https://www.sayweee.com/en/product/Yoshinoya-Cooked-Beef-with-Onions-in-Sauce--Frozen/2478?referral_id=4972487&lang=en&utm_source=copyLink

(Growing up in the tropics, we never had anything frozen. It’s more of a cultural bias from lack of exposure)

Yoshinoya is also what I spent all my pocket money on as a teenager, so it also makes me feel nostalgic even tho I can make better gyudon from scratch now

boogah,
@boogah@simian.rodeo avatar

@skinnylatte The only Yoshinoya I've ever had is the stuff from their restaurants here in the US. And that was consistently terrible.

Given that I trust your taste in food, I am also operating under the assumption that this is better than what I could walk in and get at a Yoshinoya here. 😉

@cabel Feels a little retro. I think I like it.

(The one on the right is the new one, BTW.)

Posting to my blog is so fucking frustrating now. I have to get off Wordpress. They have screwed the pooch so badly. I don't need blocks, I just need a decent writing environment. What a shame.

So, I'm trying this out... Mastodon only for now! I want to be a part of a "WP Builds" community, but all-the-platforms seem to put themselves first... ads, and ways to monetise. I recently found Discord, and set up a WP Builds server. I'm no expert, and WILL screw things up, but if you're into WordPress and want to try this out with me, here's a link to join our Discord: https://discord.gg/fCrfrvgpv6 I hope that this works!!!! Please let me know if it does not!?!? 😀

@nathan Welcome to the cabal of podcasts with a Discord!

@wpwatercooler has one that you’re very welcome to check out here:

Something I look forward to every Tuesday now is the email I get from Plex telling me what @mathowie has been watching, it saves so much time because I don't need to ask him anymore and instead I can ask him awkward questions

Friendly reminder: If you find yourself absolutely needing to share a post from Chris, Jairaj, and Hamish's Nazi Haven () it only adds another minute to ask https://archive.today to grab a fresh copy for you so you can link there instead and not give them any additional traffic.

@boogah@simian.rodeo avatar

Example: Here's this 🔥 ass post from Ed Zitron (who is moving his newsletter away from the bad place) that y'all can now read without giving any additional traffic:

"It is time for Substack to grow a fucking conscience and fight for something rather than rolling over and asking future Hitlers to rub its belly.”

Lately I’ve been loving audiobooks written/performed by comedians. They’re like high production podcasts lasting 6-8hrs, costing 15 bucks and honestly? A good deal. They tend to slow down the pace to maybe 1 big joke per minute instead of rapid-fire open mic standup.

It’s kind of silly the authors have to get a book deal, spend years writing, wait 1-2 years for publishing to put it out, then record their book.

I wish I could just pay a comedian $20 directly for a mp3 (cut out the print aspect)

boogah,
@boogah@simian.rodeo avatar

@mathowie There's a better way, friend! Allow me to put you onto Libro.fm:

https://libro.fm/referral?rf_code=lfm224476

  1. They're not Apple or Amazon.
  2. The books don’t have a bunch of terrible DRM. They're just MP3/M4B files that you can play wherever you'd like.
  3. You can set a participating bookstore to get a share of the profits from every book you buy.

Disclaimer: That is absolutely a referral link that nets me a free book if you sign up. :melting_cringe:

I think I want to get a more reliable thermometer than my infrared gun.

This turns out to be a deep rabbit hole. I already own the contactless thermometer (infrared gun) that the Wirecutter recommends: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-thermometer-for-kids-and-adults/

Specifically, I have the iProven NCT-978.

They say all thermometers they recommend are equivalent in accuracy. So if I don't trust this, what's left?

Another concern: "According to the manuals... this thermometer has a life expectancy of three years". 1 year left!

boogah,
@boogah@simian.rodeo avatar

@skyfaller We bought a Withings Thermo on sale a few years ago and it works pretty well.

We even spot test the Thermo occasionally against a cheap, generic under the tongue thermometer from CVS. The readings consistently fall within 0.1–0.2℉ of each other.

boogah,
@boogah@simian.rodeo avatar

@skyfaller I'm sure it's way “smarter” than what you're looking for tho. We don’t even use the app :mr_yuk: or anything that's attached to it.

(TBH, we probably wouldn't have even bought it were it not literally the only thermometer on sale that wasn’t a genericized “Alibaba special” drop shipped directly for resale at Amazon/Walmart/etc.)
