the weirdest thing that has taken place in my life was reading valleywag throughout the aughts

with its excellent reportage of subjects the regular tech press wouldn’t touch

learning about how all these posturing tech guys were pretty sad and pathetic, and mostly winners of a random lottery

and now almost two decades later

these same pathetic guys are OBSCENELY powerful and wealthy

and still pathetic in ways the press remained reluctant to talk about!

What is the best solution for getting a consistently up-to-date version of node on an Ubuntu server?

In the past I have been very happy with nvm in the "I am a developer installing a copy of node just for invoking in my user account" but now I'm discovering nvm… only works in that configuration, and considers "multiple users" as permanently outside the scope of what they will intentionally support. This is awkward in a server configuration.

Giving credit where credit is due.

I've mentioned my friend @StephanieJones a few times. (She may even come to Mastodon at some point.)

Early on she tried to tell Larry Tribe that he was misleading people about Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

If people are struggling with this, show them the piece I wrote in January.

I get credit for having smart friends like Stephanie.

The 14th Amendment doesn't mention elections or ballots. It simply says no one who engaged in insurrection shall "hold any office." So, what happens if, despite being removed from several state ballots, Trump is still elected? Will he be stopped from taking office? If your answer is yes, who will do it and how? The Supreme Court? On what grounds? And through what process? The states? Which ones and how will they do it? And what about the states that didn't disqualify him - will they have any say in this? If some states deem Trump an insurrectionist and remove him from their ballots and other states don't, how exactly should the 14th Amendment's "No person shall ... hold any office" provision be enforced? I'll await your answers.

@Teri_Kanefield i actually did and should note that i really do appreciate your efforts. no doubt i’m missing it but i didn’t see any answers beyond “this stuff is complex” which is definitely true! i wonder where that complexity ends? what’s the point of writing things down if they can just be endlessly debated and reframed into nothingness? a 9-0 ruling does have weight but at the same time, what’s it really say? that this law born out of an actual war is… whoops!.. too vague, sorry!

@Teri_Kanefield “oh but the 14th specifically deals with holding office, not winning office.” that’s where my original comment came from - the implications of having a constitutional amendment that can only be enforced by the very people it seeks to bar from office. you often say - apologies if i get this wrong - the law can’t solve political problems. but isn’t that the entire point - to move beyond mere opinion toward fact?

I'm currently pushing the idea that our component library's tests should be a separate package (in a monorepo), so we're testing the real built version of the library, and also the package.json exports.

Folks are a little uncomfortable that the component's tests are in a different folder to the implementation.

Is there a solution to this that isn't… very hacky?
