@_L1vY_ @misc my pet theory is the saudis (who put in more money than his western neonazish friends) actually gave him the money specifically TO run it into the ground and render it unusable as an information channel and newswire. driving down the cost of disinformation and hastening the impoverishment of journalism qua industry are strategic goals of many political currents that thrive on ever-cheaper astroturf campaigns and fake news...

by_caballero,
@by_caballero@mastodon.social avatar

@trwnh @evan @erincandescent do we want to pour even more cement around the instance model? if we at least enable per-user keys (even if only potentially/annoying/complexly) some instances have the option of decentralizing themselves, or at least giving individual users the choice to self-manage at their own risk...

by_caballero,
@by_caballero@mastodon.social avatar

@trwnh @evan @erincandescent i know i'm a broken record and everyone thinks it's because i have a dayjob in the "at your own risk" factory but self-managed keys would definitely make feature-parity (and interoperability) with nostr and bluesky a lot easier, which seem more popular goals than "authenticate me with my crypto wallet/Hooli wallet/microsoft authenticator" per se

    Is there anyone working on generalizing the Mastodon API, or documentation to follow for apps that are using it for things other then Mastodon?

    by_caballero,
    @by_caballero@mastodon.social avatar

    @trwnh @liaizon yeah, I would tend to agree that hardening something halfway between AP API and Masto API in the SocialCG might be a good thing to do and kinda what OP was asking. like, has anyone documented the delta/venndiagram of masto API and AP API so that people can strategically find out how much of each they need when.

    by_caballero,
    @by_caballero@mastodon.social avatar

    @liaizon @trwnh i can see, for most projects new to federation, how maybe making 1 or more actors "followable from mastodon" is an MVP feature, while full cross-commenting is a v1 feature or even a v2 feature if you want cross-commenting that also includes fora, lemmy, etc...as for API documentation commentary to facilitate that kind of subsetting/profiling of the two APIs, maybe
    @J12t or @smallcircles knows of something along these lines?

    by_caballero,
    @by_caballero@mastodon.social avatar

    @liaizon @trwnh @J12t @smallcircles not at all, links please! very curious where/how that's playing out

    by_caballero,
    @by_caballero@mastodon.social avatar

    @smallcircles @liaizon @trwnh @J12t This is the direction I've been nudging folks in with regards to testing-- any test harness or "trunk" needs to be extremely composable/flexible (and, ideally, decentralized enough that it 100 forks can blooms and contribute back to one another) since each profile will have slightly different needs in its runner and environment. The way I see it, most software will focus its conformance/CI efforts on one profile, and mostly just "meta"-software like

    The gist of what I am going for with :

    What is a minimal subset that would allow us to treat the @'context object as a set of extensions rather than a set of processing directives while still remaining useful?

    Basically, you could have a "mastodon postprocessor" with all of the logic there.

    I have a bunch of thoughts and have validated some, but I'm interested in the experience of those who have banged their head against this problem. Any ideas? Does that make sense as a goal?

    @hrefna @smallcircles @gugurumbe @KevinMarks @jenniferplusplus @fedidevs here's another git repo you could bash your head against if you're keeping a scoresheet of who uses LD how and where. it's also extremely interesting for 100 other reasons.

    OK fedi, I want to make sure I'm not missing things—please point me to the best arguments on how decentralizing/federating content moderation + other safety work improves outcomes for humans in a world where fedi scales up fast over the next year, compared to centralized networks.

    (For adversarial stuff incl spam, CSAM, coordinated inauthentic account networks/influence campaigns, hate speech, semi-pro trolling, professional and non-professional disinfo, covert adversarial instances, etc.)

    by_caballero,
    @by_caballero@mastodon.social avatar

    @kissane TBH, I think it's really a matter of perspective. Moderation-aaS and other middleware is a booming business, and people from those companies are eager to figure out whether this is their next multi-million-user sales base. "Artesanal moderation" as I like to call it has a pretty steep technical debt needed before they can efficiently scale up info-sharing, but it's possible. Case law matters more than regulation here, in the form of chilling effects and "received" compliance norms.
