Remember that iPhone panorama photo of a woman trying on a wedding dress and the processing software placed her in three different poses across the mirrors?

Photographers got inspired and are now using that effect/trick for some clever pano photography, selfies, and art.

@waynedixon For my interests, it's just not there yet. It needs to be far lighter, zero cable, and actually useful battery life, for starters.

Just so many things that will probably take a while to become reality, considering how Apple shipped this thing now in its current form. Like, I'm sure it killed them to ship it with that wired battery pack. It just looks so gaudy.

Dusting off my Finer Things in Tech blog, I miss writing. This is just a tiny tip, though. Working on more.

Sure, trying to select and move a few objects in Pages should lock up my M1 Pro MBP so hard that the Force Quit menu can't even be triggered by keyboard shortcut. Why not.

Generative AI music firm says (reaffirms the obvious) quiet part out loud: These tools could not exist if they hadnโ€™t stolen all the content used to create them.

We need to regulate the absolute crap out of these corporate thieves. https://www.computerweekly.com/news/366567750/GenAI-tools-could-not-exist-if-firms-are-made-to-pay-copyright

An enlightening video series inspired by a non-profit that studies city design and finances:

โ€œOnce you start to learn about Strong Towns, youโ€™ll start to understand why car-dependent suburbia canโ€™t continue.

Itโ€™s not a matter of preference or how people want to live. These places simply cannot sustain themselves.

โ€ฆ American suburbs are literally a Ponzi schemeโ€”a development pattern that constantly needs more growth, and often more debt, in order to remain solvent.โ€

Ooh, and part 4 gets into some great financial examples of unsustainable suburbs.

In one suburb, the cost of upgrading or fixing its aging water system was $27,000 per home, which was the median yearly income of each family. ๐Ÿคฏ

Finally taking the time to set up Safari Profiles properly and bind certain websites like YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to open in an โ€˜Undesirables' profile that I don't use for anything else. This feels like a better setup. #Apple #Safari #privacy

Screenshot of the settings for a specific website in Safari for Mac. The highlighted option showcases how you can bind a particular website/domain to always open in a particular Safari Profile for privacy and multiple account.

chartier,
@chartier@toot.cafe avatar

@donkey As I understand it, each profile is its own sandbox, similar to Firefox Containers. I believe Safari uses other tech to (try and) block cross-site snooping and cookies, but I don't think Profiles are specifically built for that. I could be wrong.

โ€œThe return-to-office demands also make little sense from an overall economic perspective at a time when a third of Americans who can do their job remotely now only work from home, up from only 7% before Covid, according to the Pew Research Center, yet the economy is very strong in terms of low unemployment and GDP growth. If working from home suppressed innovation, productivity and creativity, you would expect quite different economic results.โ€ https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/22/opinions/remote-work-jobs-bergen/index.html

TIL there is a believable Groundhog Day fan theory that Bill Murrayโ€™s high school acquaintance, Ned Ryerson, is actually the devil, who thrusts Murray into the time loop because he refused the offer to buy life insurance. And Murray only escapes not because he finally betters himself or scores the romantic interest, but because he finally buys life insurance. https://www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/s/ri9HM5xwD6
