Turning off my adblocker because otherwise the site won't display the article then leaving the site because the ads cause the browser to freeze.

@wx1g Not needing adblockers is before my time. When I got on the web so many sides had flashing ads everywhere you looked. But I do think 20 years ago the ads weren't so numerous that they sucked up all the browser's resources.

@wx1g I use uBlock origin. I use Chrome and uBlock origin on Windows 10. Sites can definitely check and see if I'm using it. Although not all sites bother.

Republicans: Gender is physically determined at birth and is immutable.

Also Republicans: If a child reads a book with a trans character they will instantly change genders.

“My son spends too much time being fascinated by ants and clouds. He spends a lot of time watching the world go by will this improve?” - Real, if depressing, question from a parenting group.

MY GOD — I hope not!
It’s really strange how some things are seen as needlessly day-dreamy obsessions while other fixations aren’t questioned or encouraged. There is a whole language for understanding the world of ants, in the complexity of clouds— What questions do they raise that are so hard to let go of?

@scottytrees I use a Chrome extension called Nitter Redirect that automatically redirects Twitter links to Nitter. It's so useful.

Not a great look for a senator from Alabama to suggest that white nationalists should be welcomed in the military. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/10/tuberville-military-white-nationalists/

For years Republicans were afraid to say the quiet part out loud. Then Trump proved saying it flat out appeals to Republicans, so they've stopped pretending.

If we go back to 1980 and save a kitten, sci-fi tells us the future will be a cyborgian dystopia. But if we use renewable energy, been guns, invest in education, and give everyone healthcare it won't, if you believe Republicans, have any real effect on our future.

Republicans don't want a strong ethics code for the Supreme Court because if Thomas can't take bribes he's just going to resign. It's all he's there for.

It's so weird when journalists talk about "moderate" Republicans. It's as though terrorists took control of the Super Bowl and one terrorist said "we're going to kill all the hostages" and the other said "we're going to kill all the hostages except children" and journalists started calling the second one "the moderate."

I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

(1/4)

cherold,
@cherold@zirk.us avatar

@feditips Or, you know, you could wait for your worst-case scenario to actually happen rather than say "This thing that might be bad could happen in these circumstances so let's take drastic action right now to head off this theoretical possibility."

It is just amazing how much I don't give a shit about what's happening in The this season. WTF happened?

cherold,
@cherold@zirk.us avatar

@miksimum Episode 2 was an excellent episode. 3 I didn't like at all - it was nothing I was interested in and they could have set up the villain more satisfactorily in a 10-minute subplot. Right now I'm in the middle of episode 7 and everytime I would go back to it there's an episode of Titans or Picard that I watch instead so I don't even know when I'll get around to finishing it!

And Grogu is like, barely in this. He's gone from central character to basically a pet.

Twitter is dying in the same way that Musk is going broke. Yes, things are moving in that direction, but don't plan to pop the cork anytime soon.

You’ll spend $8 on a coffee

On a beer

On a pair of socks

On parking

On an ice cream

On a bottle of water

On a toothbrush

SO WHY WON’T YOU LIGHT $8 PER MONTH ON FIRE?!? HUH? WHY ARE YOU SUCH AN ENTITLED MORON?

cherold,
@cherold@zirk.us avatar

@juddlegum You pay $8 for a bottle of water? You might want to do some comparison shopping.
