In a speech today in Tempe, , President Biden is to say “there is something dangerous happening in America. There is an extremist movement that does not share the basic beliefs of our democracy. The MAGA Movement.”

cherold,
@cherold@zirk.us avatar

@w7voa At first I didn't like Biden pretending there's a difference between "MAGA extremists" MAGA, and Republicans, all of whom are ready to break Democracy. But while inaccurate, I do think it's excellent messaging, because MAGA extremists conjures up things like ISIS extremists and underlines the urgency. And maybe the message of two MAGAs gives a few borderline MAGAts an off-ramp away from authoritarianism.

    @Teri_Kanefield People don't realize what the rage merchants are doing to them. When I took them all out of my feed, and stuck to the people like you who speak knowledgeably and temperately, my stress level went down A LOT. A constant refrain of "GET ANGRY! ANGRIER" is just really bad for us mentally. There should be a self-help book, "Unfollow Your Way to Mental Health."

    @Teri_Kanefield I think a lot of people are thinking, if Trump were a homeless drug dealer he wouldn't have so many rights. We often hear of some local sheriff ignoring legal rights.

    But A, that often results in a lawsuit later, because even homeless drug dealers have legal rights, and B, everyone's watching, and it's much harder to deprive someone of their legal rights in bright sunshine.

    We should probably be all madder about people being deprived of their rights than Trump retaining his.

    FIVE SEX PANICS

    In the 19th century there was a panic about masturbation and its effect on the nation on both sides of the Atlantic.

    At the beginning of the 20th century there was a panic about women's liberation, in sex and politics, destroying society.

    By the mid 20th century there was a panic about sexual liberation and free love.

    Later, in the 70s and 80s, there was a gay panic and gays were presented as predators and deviants.

    Now, in the early 21st century, there is a trans panic and its trans and non-binary people who are seen as the social threat.

    These are five separate panics across over 150 years, But, actually, they're not separate at all: they are the same panic generated by the same people that comes again and again and again in waves. Its a panic generated by the sexually puritan and socially authoritarian whose politics is that of coercion and control.

    This tendency is the ultimate enemy of all lovers of social and personal freedom.

    @cherold@zirk.us avatar

    @autoerot1ca I recall a book, I think by Doris Lessing, that talked about the 20th century war; not wars, but a single war that just shapeshifted over the decades. In the same way, it's reasonable to say there has been a single sex panic in America that has gone on since the first Puritan set foot on this stolen continent.,

    @Teri_Kanefield I guess my question here would be, if Trump were any other defendant, how would he be treated? Let's say Trump was a mobster up on racketeering charges or something, and he was posting on social media, or stating in interviews, "this judge is corrupt, this trial is a witch hunt, and someone oughta take care of these corrupt prosecutors trying to take me down."

    Does a mobster have a 1A defense of this? "Hey, I'm just talkin' here."

    Does this happen?

    @cloudguy some people seem to be taking this as the writer saying Mastodon should be monetized. What he's actually saying is billionaire's are concerned with figuring out how to monetize Mastodon. He's not saying that's a good thing.

    He's mainly saying some nonsense about the Twitter of Babel, actually: https://www.wired.com/story/god-did-us-a-favor-by-destroying-twitter/

    OMG, Mastodon has a proper search now? I saw that was something that was announced but I wasn't sure if it was something you had to enable or only worked on some instances but not others. I actually have a second account on an instance that has supported search for some time that I only use for search.

    But I just searched for posts with "Biden" on this instance, and here they are!

    @Teri_Kanefield The legislature just gave a big fuck you to the court, but why? I mean, there was no way they wouldn't lose in court again. Were they hoping they could get one election in under this map before they lost? Or is this a first shot in a war against the court in which they will simply refuse to honor the map the court has ordered? Or is it simply that GOP politicians cannot bring themselves to do the right thing even if they know their work will be thrown out?
