You're not weird, some people just lie about themselves, and you don't.

@RickiTarr
"Most" people lie about themselves. I wish I could remember the exact quote and source (Mark Twain, IIRC?), but runs similar to:

"The best front you can present to others is your true self, for no one else will believe it."

At band practice today, I felt like a lead guitarist there for a few minutes. Something clicked and I was in the zone. It was a genuinely new experience for me.

I will now be an insufferable bastard all of the time.

@rjblaskiewicz
It's amazing (miraculous) what musicians can do when they lose the awareness of themselves (nerves, what do other people think, etc.). That was my own biggest limitation playing professionally. Some folks seem to be gifted without that self-awareness when they're playing.

chessert,
@chessert@mastodon.online avatar

@rjblaskiewicz
I'm not sure that it requires a bigger ego: just being more aware of the music/performance, and less aware of yourself. I guess that could be the same thing?

chessert,
@chessert@mastodon.online avatar

@rjblaskiewicz
Playing live regularly, and playing with musicians "better" than you is the fastest way to grow and mature as a musician, IMHO. 😀

My second favorite piece featuring the Horn in Chamber Music (small ensembles). An older recording. Very good recording, despite using primitive recording technology.

Johannes Brahms, Horn trio, Eb major, Op. 40 - Recorded in London, 13 November 1933

Adolf Busch, violin
Aubrey Brain, horn (Dennis Brain's father)
Rudolf Serkin, piano

I. Andante (0:00)
II. Scherzo. Allegro (8:11)
III. Adagio mesto (15:11)
IV. Allegro con brio (23:30)

the reticence of some to block is indeed disconcerting, but there is a solution

there are standards for responsible servers. if enough bigotry, hate, trolling etc emanates from a server, the problem is moved from blocking accounts, to blocking the server itself

we all know what is going to come from threads

and the inevitable outlined above will just play out

and those servers that choose not to block, will find themselves eaten alive by the toxicity that will result

chessert,
@chessert@mastodon.online avatar

@benroyce
My server (mastodon.online) isn't currently blocking... and that's concerning. I have added Meta to my personal domain block list. I may choose to move to a different Mastodon server in the future: keeping my options open. In any case, I'm not keen to react with Meta content on any level.

Oboe production. Quality musical instruments aren't cheap. Professional wind instruments are expensive, but nothing compared to professional (and historical) stringed instruments. Pipe organs, of course, are a separate entity, since they usually including an entire building. 😮

MLB Opening Day (in the USA) is tomorrow! ⚾ 😁

Here in NEPA, I have my choice of 2 minor league teams relatively close: the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NY Mets AA) , and the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders (NY Yankees AAA).

As a native Chicagoan, it distresses me to root for NY teams. But we'll see how I fare. 😉

Hoping to attend several games this season. It's been a while (years) - since COVID came to town.

Julian Assange could be freed as US prosecutors ‘consider lesser charges’

http://archive.today/dekgZ (archived article, no paywall)

From The Times. I will believe it when I see it. This has gone on too long. I have no respect for much of Assange's behaviour and subsequent stupidity, but this has clearly been a malicious and dangerous prosecution/rendition with dangerous precedents for journalism and freedom of speech.

I initially sided with him. But subsequent revelations make it clear he's not an "innocent victim". At this point, I have no problem seeing him defend his actions in US courts. And if he doesn't have to, best wishes to him. He's not a Saint, and I'm not going to care what he says, or thinks in the future.

There were warnings about using this even when I was an active Perl programmer (2009-2016). Not sure why you’d choose to put such code in production, at the time? Kinda like hooking your business to Google or Microsoft: nope — none for me, thanks. 🤷🏻‍♂️

chessert,
@chessert@mastodon.online avatar

@mjgardner
Yes. I had a couple unpleasant encounters with the ~~ operator when we were forced to upgrade our production Perl libraries, due to Debian releases.

The company's entire online (web app) codebase was in Perl, well after it should have been retired. It probably still is??? I tried to push them toward Python, or even PHP, but the "head shed" had been there since the 1990s, and any significant change was viewed as a loss of control. 🙄
