What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

chessert,
@chessert@mastodon.online avatar

@RickiTarr
Oh, what the heck - I'll join in.

I attended public schools except for Junior High, where I attended a private school, K-12. My class size there was ~12 kids. It was overall a good experience, with some bullying from the HS age kids.

For High School, I went back to public school. I was one of 1100+ kids in my class, with a total school population (grades 9-12) of nearly 5,000. A sprawling physical campus.

Injustice has always been my flash anger trigger (for a lot of reasons & experience I'm not going to detail here).

But the older I get, the less apologetic and circumspect I become about expressing those opinions and heat. I guess rage can build slowly.

“ The memo—written by Times standards editor Susan Wessling, international editor Philip Pan…”

Wessling reports either to Joe Kahn, top editor, or Carolyn Ryan/Marc Lacey, seconds-in-command.

This doesn’t get done w/out approval by Kahn and Sulzberger.

The coming weeks will be the ultimate test for the New York Times. Will they stick to facts and report honestly on the Trump criminal trial, or will they run interference with damage control communications for Trump? If history is a guide, there is little reason to be very optimistic, but we shall see.

You’re kidding, right? What on Earth makes you think they’ll suddenly rediscover real journalism? And their corporate/billionaire owners wouldn’t stand for that.

Many people don't understand why I chose to play the Horn... and particularly why I chose to try to make a career of it. Well, it started in grade school, at Miller Elementary School. We got to choose instruments in 4th grade. I chose Trumpet or Drums. They went alphabetically, and by the time they got to me (H)... Trumpets and Drums were gone.

Mark E Elias is doing so much great work in defending our democracy and voting rights that it would be an outright disgrace not to show up in November and vote your power.

Lawrence Tribe is spot on about the GOP Nazis.

Only Benjamin Netanyahu could bring me to consider rooting for Iran. Consider what you have permanently(?) lost, Israel. Sympathy is gone. I hope you all enjoy the Gaza beach condos Jared Kushner will build (with Saudi money), on the skeletons of murdered Palestinians. Just my own observation: YMMV, of course... and I'll still try to respect that.

Most people getting EBT cards do work and they usually work at low paying jobs like Walmart or fast food places, or factory or maintenance jobs.

But even if they don’t, we should be feeding hungry kids. Republicans all over the country have been rejecting programs like this. Democratic governors create and expand them.

I’m almost to the point of adding a filter for any toots containing “The New York Times” or “NYT”. I cannot overemphasize how little I care about any and all opinions expressed there. They do not deserve any of my attention. (Same for Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.)

With his attempt to remove abortion as a losing election issue for MAGA RATS (Republicans Against Truth & Sanity), Trump has instead alienated his base and confirmed Democrats statements on Trump's lack of loyalty and trustworthiness

Donald Trump said decisions about abortion rights should be left to the states, releasing a statement on the contentious election issue on Monday.

Seattle Times has a new report on how Boeing's current challenges can be traced to prioritizing shareholders over everything for 25 years, slashing costs and outsourcing key work, weakening unions, and pressuring suppliers, leading to loss of its core competency.

This is a great example of how the stock market rewards short term thinking leading to companies sabotaging themselves. Intel is in the same boat.

There is one thought that doesn't seem to disappear from my mind. And it started rearing it's head back in September when I visited Seoul for the first time, slowly faded away and when I lived in Indonesia for 2 months, it came back in full swing. To make matters more 'interestinf' over the last few days, that thought is getting louder and louder.

The thought that The Netherlands doesn't spark joy (anymore)....

I think that @chessert will get some nostalgia from this ;-)

I had two tours there: Ouijongbu (1997-1998) with the US 2nd Infantry Division; and Yongsan, Seoul (2003-2004) with the 8th US Army. Yes everything looks familiar (but we weren’t allowed in Korean barber shops, for delicate reasons). 🙂

Korea is a beautiful and wonderful Nation. The people are sweet, the culture is fascinating, and the food is fantastic! 🙂 🇰🇷

Also, looking at these photos, they don’t look out of place in 2004? Has everything changed so much since then? It wouldn’t surprise me: Korea is not a country that’s sitting still. 🙂

If I ever would got the chance to redo my education, I would probably pursue a degree in North Korean Studies.

chessert,
@chessert@mastodon.online avatar

@SuitedUpDev
It will be very similar to the reunification of Germany, I think. South Korea will need to invest massively, and there may be resentment from that. Plus reeducation, as you point out. But the desire for a unified Korea ebbs and flows in South Korean culture/society: don’t assume what you perceive now is how they’ve always thought about it, or how they will think about it tomorrow. I think Korean society is much more dynamic (in thought/belief) than we’re used to in the West.
