The article provides a good overview of some of the compounding effects (SO2 aerosols, #solarcycle 25, #water vapour from the Hunga Tonga #eruption and El Nĩno), but is it enough to explain what’s happening? Either way, it’s an enormous amount of heat.

@russellt You're right about bitcoin and other proof of work based currencies, however this is no longer the case for Ethereum, the second largest crypto.
Ethereum upgraded from Proof of Work (energy intensive) to Proof of Stake (collateral intensive) in Sept 2022, so it now uses a negligible amount of energy when compared to #AI, bitcoin, or video games

Models that require a terrawatt-hour to train, if connected to the grid would emit on the order of a quarter million tons of #CO2 indirectly. AI companies will need to become clean energy companies.
