So, I’m curious: there’s a growing number of hosting platforms specifically for the #Fediverse. For those involved in this, who are comfortable with answering: is there a particular set of tools you use for managing, monitoring, and spinning up instances?

Are those tools open source?

I’m mainly wondering about whether there’s some kind of open platform / dashboard / infra tools that could serve a particular need for hosting / managing / provisioning Fedi servers, and whether the existing hosts in the space would benefit from a shared project of some sort.

So, we need to have a bit of a talk. Don't worry, it's a good thing.

How should I say this?

Building and reporting on this space has been a unique and rare privilege. We're reporting on a nascent technology beat, and witnessing it grow and evolve in real-time. Working with @damon and @laurenshof on @decentered and getting to talk to so many incredible people has been validating beyond my wildest dreams.

I wonder how hard it would be to write a simple boost bot? 🤔

You'd basically just need an API token for your user, and a way to target a specific account you're following. Upon seeing a new status from that account, your own account would boost it.

Seems simple enough?

Just because someone specializes in something you don’t like doesn’t mean they’re some kind of villain.

A lawyer specializes in advising and defending AI model creators? Tough titties: somebody has to do that job, and everyone deserves representation in a court of law. It’s better if someone specializes and knows the ins and outs.

A former Twitter cofounder did business as an angel investor and maybe some VC stuff? Okay, in what capacity? A guy who has repeatedly started companies giving his insights to new startups doesn’t have to be this malicious, predatory thing.

But no, half of you hear “Masto board has Twitter guy and AI/Blockchain bro”, and the community immediately erupts into hysterics while doing exactly zero research on any of these people.

One thing I'd really love to see as a feature for most platforms: auto-boost specific accounts.

It would be great if my general social account automatically shared Pixelfed pictures and PeerTube videos and Funkwhale music and WordPress blog posts automatically.

I know Hubzilla and probably Streams have that. It's a good feature.

Some days, I think that maybe I should just stop writing, burn my site down, and disappear.

I love doing what I do, and I know there are areas in which I need to improve. But, the last few big articles have been rough for me. People have gotten really angry with me for a variety of reasons, some of which I fundamentally disagree with. But, it forces me to look inwards.

Maybe it's my fragile white male ego, my mediocrity, my deep cynicism, or my stupidity. Maybe I'm just a worthless piece of shit.

I think what terrifies me is that I want to make a living doing this down the road, but I'm thin-skinned and fragile. I live for the acceptance of other people, because my self-image is distorted beyond recognition.

So uh, question!

I’m looking at this dude’s code for the plugin I’m using, and it looks like it doesn’t use an actual template to render things, but instead uses some kind of concatenation assignment to build an interface one div at a time?

https://github.com/jeffreyvr/easy-liveblogs/blob/43b4c25e7a13f70f8158d221d4beb2ec391eb656/includes/class-elb-liveblog.php#L121

Like, I’m not super great at PHP beyond just hacking things together…but, is this a valid way to do things? Is there a better way to just call template pieces from somewhere?

Weird, no amount of trying is getting any Threads account or post to load on here.

I could’ve sworn I managed to pull up Evan’s earlier, but now it doesn’t exist… 🤔

Takeaways from today’s thoughts, although my brain is filled with all kinds of tangents right now:

  1. Onboarding new devs sucks. There’s way too many assumptions of what developers are supposed to know before they write a single line of code. There’s cultural hostility towards things people barely take the time to learn about or understand. There’s not really much of a welcoming committee for new devs. Sash’s experience definitely came up here.

Okay, if you’re on , @moshidon is legit a fantastic client for Android. This is straight up my default client now. It supports:

  • Markdown / MFM
  • Emoji Reacts
  • Quote Posts
  • Bubble Timeline

Plus it looks great, has a ton of customization options, and you can tweak a ton of different pieces to make it do what you want?!

Sometimes, a bad memory can tear open an old wound that you thought had long healed. You wonder to yourself whether things could have been different, if you had made better decisions. Your mind teases you of what could have been, as your morosely gaze into a deep abyss of failure.

You think about what it would take to be reborn and start again, but your head is clouded, and your body weak. The dream lives on in you, but fear and sorrow just keep you down. To move a finger is to lift a mountain.

As a fun little experiment, @damon and I worked together to get a instance up and running that stores media on ! It was an interesting learning experience.

I don’t think we’re ready to announce anything yet, as this was in service of another project in development. But, there’s an increasing number of ways to host content on an IPFS node service, and tie it back to platforms like Mastodon using an S3-compatible API for Object Storage and some proxying.

This is all pretty rudimentary, but the big-brain realization is that a more robust version could be done by pairing Minio to s3x if we wanted to self-host an IPFS node with those specific features.

Some of the conversations on about my recent article got some brain juices going.

Some people sided with the devs and said "You don't understand Open Source, you can't just demand something from people working for free!"

Here is a rambling brain-dump: https://deadsuperhero.com/2024/03/economic-musings-on-federated-networks/

It’s kind of a weird write-up, but an interesting question came up in chat today: “Hey, Fediverse guys, what are some of your hobbies that don’t involve the Fediverse?”

I thought it might be nice to share a bunch of other things I’m passionate about, featuring a bunch of unfinished creative projects, from art to music to games.

Anyway, if anyone ever wants to collab on something, that would kind of be a really big deal to me? 🥺 👉 👈

I'm probably going to make an official post about this sometime soon, but it's worth posting a personal take first.

I'm tired. I'm running myself ragged.

I love working on We Distribute. The domain area is something I'm really passionate about, and I love being able to report on so much going on with it.

To date, I have published roughly 120+ articles for We Distribute. It's a labor of love, and often hard work. I've learned a lot, and gotten much better over the years with what I do.

I'm running on fumes. I need help running this thing.

Sanity check: if you block an instance's Actor (eg, server.domain@server.domain), does that block the whole instance?

I don't see why it wouldn't, but I'm making some big assumptions, and I'm not sure if this is standard for non-Masto servers.

I think coming into the , and taking off as its own network, might create the pressure and motivation we need to fix what's missing in ActivityPub.

A lot of people are doing super important work right now, creating proposals and extensions, case studies, and doing research on how we can extend the protocol. That's great!

I think we need our feet held to the fire in order to come together, and try to solve a bunch of problems like Identity, Data Portability, Privacy Controls, and Discovery. It might be enough to push for 2.0.

Damn, applying for a bank account for a nonprofit LLC is harder than I thought. There’s some really polished-looking apps like Revolut Business and Crowded Bank, but they pretty much reject you immediately if you’re a nonprofit and/or an LLC.

I guess I could just go with a generic national provider or something, but I was kind of hoping for something that actually offers some level of polish and tools specific to the nonprofit space.

I have a article coming out tomorrow that I'm really not going to enjoy publishing. I think a lot of people are going to hate it, get nasty about it, and probably make the usual boring claims of how I'm spouting bullshit.

I feel as though part of Mastodon's user culture has enabled harassment, doxxing, death threats, and a litany of other horrible shit. What's particularly disgusting, though, is that a lot of these people will whine about privacy and consent before switching to some absolutely dehumanizing tactics that uphold neither principle.

It's not the progressive welcoming circle of friendship that it looks like. It's kind of a fucking vanity cult, actually.

Due to the amount of days I’ve accrued in my leave balance, I officially was able to put in my two weeks’ notice with the United States Air Force today.

This is a weird time for me. I’m figuring out what my future looks like, and planning on going back to school full-time. Part of me is really happy, another part of me is sad, worried, terrified, burnt out, and depressed.

I had some amazing experiences, and met some incredible people. We made memories together. Walking away from that puts me in a really weird spot. I have to take time to figure my shit out.

It’s kind of funny to see people freak out about systemd, when Microsoft is building a moment-to-moment surveillance system.

I don’t doubt that this could be a useful tool, but the potential for harm makes it completely fucking dystopian. That it’s also a black box that you can’t examine the source code of makes it way worse.
