Takeaways from today’s thoughts, although my brain is filled with all kinds of tangents right now:

  1. Onboarding new devs sucks. There’s way too many assumptions of what developers are supposed to know before they write a single line of code. There’s cultural hostility towards things people barely take the time to learn about or understand. There’s not really much of a welcoming committee for new devs. Sash’s experience definitely came up here.

  1. is building so many crazy-ass things that are incredibly important: moderator stipend funds, a portal for learning from other moderators & exchanging notes & building fellowship, CSAM detection tools, labelers, protection for at-risk moderators. Just so many things we probably should've started building years ago.

Also, the Fediverse is not the only one struggling with this right now. Both Bluesky and Nostr are trying to figure out Trust & Safety in their own ways. One kind of horrifying realization is that cross-service labeling has an edge-case: if most of the Fediverse blocks a subset of it en masse, there's not enough observability to know what to label. It can end up on the other side of the bridge with no information, which actually is a problem for Nostr.

One of the ideas I’ve been kicking around for the is promotion of small businesses by Fedizens. This includes tools, apps, and services, not all of which have to necessarily be super developer-focused.

If you’re interested in being featured on some kind of directory, or know of a really good candidate, let me know! I have a little list going already, but would love to actually turn it into something.

So, we need to have a bit of a talk. Don't worry, it's a good thing.

How should I say this?

Building and reporting on this space has been a unique and rare privilege. We're reporting on a nascent technology beat, and witnessing it grow and evolve in real-time. Working with @damon and @laurenshof on @decentered and getting to talk to so many incredible people has been validating beyond my wildest dreams.

We Distribute Media has been successfully incorporated as a nonprofit at the state level, but we're still waiting at the federal level. It's a slow process, but I have high hopes.

Once something initial is put into place, we can focus on the next phase: applying for grants, sponsorships, and crowdfunding.

The ultimate goal is to have an entity capable of covering operating costs, and paying writers, an editor, and people to help with A/V production.

All of this is new and scary and exciting, and I have a lot to learn. But for now, the waiting process is painfully slow.

Hey, if you missed the demos, and wanted to see versions, you can now watch them on Spectra Video!

We will be using them in our upcoming write-ups on We Distribute!

I'm probably going to make an official post about this sometime soon, but it's worth posting a personal take first.

I'm tired. I'm running myself ragged.

I love working on We Distribute. The domain area is something I'm really passionate about, and I love being able to report on so much going on with it.

To date, I have published roughly 120+ articles for We Distribute. It's a labor of love, and often hard work. I've learned a lot, and gotten much better over the years with what I do.

I'm running on fumes. I need help running this thing.

@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

We Distribute needs people to help run it. I'm in the process of incorporating as a 501c3, but it's time-consuming and a lot to figure out. I don't really have much money to pay people for the time being, but I hope to change that.

We Distribute needs knowledge experts. It needs passionate writers. It needs people to help run the accounts, and give advice. It needs people that know how to edit media.

I realize that this is kind of a tall order, but if you'd like to work with us, it would be a joy to help bring you into the fold.

A small, but hopeful update: has been going through a lengthy process of becoming a Nonprofit Corporation. The main hurdles are now complete; we just have to tackle the big one!

I am working to establish my long-term hobby into a proper 501c3 Non Profit, with the goal of taking tax-deductible donations, sponsorships, grants, and premium subscription sales to raise funds and pay people: writers, artists, audio engineers, and more.

There's a lot to figure out still, but we're hoping to do a big crowdfunding push soon!

For the past few years, I’ve been running , a tech blog / news publication dedicated to open source, decentralized social communication systems. It’s evolved from a tiny personal blog to something that kind of resembles a news outlet.

This is a musing on my journey, and my hopes on where I can take this thing.

As a fun little experiment, @damon and I worked together to get a instance up and running that stores media on ! It was an interesting learning experience.

I don’t think we’re ready to announce anything yet, as this was in service of another project in development. But, there’s an increasing number of ways to host content on an IPFS node service, and tie it back to platforms like Mastodon using an S3-compatible API for Object Storage and some proxying.

This is all pretty rudimentary, but the big-brain realization is that a more robust version could be done by pairing Minio to s3x if we wanted to self-host an IPFS node with those specific features.

Some of the conversations on about my recent article got some brain juices going.

Some people sided with the devs and said "You don't understand Open Source, you can't just demand something from people working for free!"

There are a lot of takeaways from the ongoing spam problems that the Fediverse is going through right now.

One of my biggest takeaways, though, is that Pleroma / Akkoma's MessageRewriteFacility (MRF) should be a standard fixture across Fediverse platforms. Mastodon should have it. Friendica should have it. PeerTube should have it.

It's that good. Admins can determine a wide variety of blocks and filters for inbound messages, and avoid a lot of grief this way.

I think coming into the , and taking off as its own network, might create the pressure and motivation we need to fix what's missing in ActivityPub.

A lot of people are doing super important work right now, creating proposals and extensions, case studies, and doing research on how we can extend the protocol. That's great!

I think we need our feet held to the fire in order to come together, and try to solve a bunch of problems like Identity, Data Portability, Privacy Controls, and Discovery. It might be enough to push for 2.0.

Hey, so this is kind of a weird question, but I’ve never asked before: is coming back in May 2024. Would anyone be interested in making a song with me for the contest?

I love to sing and write lyrics, and can kind of put together a skeleton of a song together with my digital keyboard, and LMMS / Ardour?

I have a article coming out tomorrow that I'm really not going to enjoy publishing. I think a lot of people are going to hate it, get nasty about it, and probably make the usual boring claims of how I'm spouting bullshit.

I feel as though part of Mastodon's user culture has enabled harassment, doxxing, death threats, and a litany of other horrible shit. What's particularly disgusting, though, is that a lot of these people will whine about privacy and consent before switching to some absolutely dehumanizing tactics that uphold neither principle.

It's not the progressive welcoming circle of friendship that it looks like. It's kind of a fucking vanity cult, actually.

Okay, if you’re on , @moshidon is legit a fantastic client for Android. This is straight up my default client now. It supports:

  • Markdown / MFM
  • Emoji Reacts
  • Quote Posts
  • Bubble Timeline

Plus it looks great, has a ton of customization options, and you can tweak a ton of different pieces to make it do what you want?!

Out of a sense of necessity: an upcoming article will focus on the new members of Mastodon’s board, and look into who they are, and what they’ve done. Should be an interesting write-up.

It’s so messed up that OS vendors just assume it’s okay to throw ads onto your desktop or your phone. My Samsung just started throwing them in my notifications, and there’s no way to turn them off.

I didn’t want to have to root my phone and install a different version of Android on it, but this is downright hostile.

Random question: is there a good open source tool out there for making animated vertical videos? Something that you could use for making Reels or Tiktok videos?

Preferably web-based?

If not, I might have an idea for stories 😅
