🪐 I have recently made some changes to https://ciclops.org — the Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for Operations after having made a static site of it two years ago ( https://derickrethans.nl/concerning-cassini.html ).

🕶️ While doing that, I found some stereographic images. The ones you need 3D glasses for.

🍀 Luckily I have a pair on my desk, so I could see a crater on Rhea in 3D, and the moon Pan!

Isn't that awesome?

Hi, for the thousandth time:

A generative AI can’t research or check sources; it doesn’t have a concept of these things.

It doesn’t have concept of anything. It doesn’t know what a concept is.

It knows nothing, because it cannot think.

It’s literally an autocomplete algorithm with a large corpus of text.

The death of Peter Higgs is sad news. I remember him being in the green room at the Cheltenham Science Festival years ago, and he was so humble and polite to everyone. Dara Ó Briain (the comedian) was there, and he'd brought an empty jam jar with a hand-written label that said "this jar contains 1 Higgs Boson. Certified by... " and he got Peter Higgs to sign the bottom. (apparently that's the average number present). The jam jar made everyone very happy.

It’s total solar eclipse day.

They happen somewhere on Earth once every 18 months or so.

But most people can’t afford to go chasing them, so the better question is how long you’d have to wait to see one where you live.

On average, it takes 375 years.

So if you’re lucky enough to be somewhere in North America experiencing totality today:

Put down your phone & camera during the main event, watch, be amazed, & embrace being made from starstuff 🌞🌑

All it would take for AI to completely collapse is a ruling in the US saying these companies have to licence the content they used to train these tools.

They simply would never reach a sustainable business model if they had to fairly compensate all the people who wrote, drew, edited, sang or just created the content they use.

Simply being forced to respect attribution and licenses would kill them. Will that ruling ever happen? Maybe not. Should it? I think so.

@mahbub « It’s different, we’re not copying the content, we’re creating something derivative so it’s ok », they say, as they refuse to acknowledge licenses

The account and ballastics of the strike on vehicles leave absolutely ZERO room for doubt: deliberately targeted the aid agency in . The clearly marked vehicles were spread out over a 1.5 mile route previously agreed with the IDF. They were targeted in succession, as passengers from the first vehicle were fleeing to the 2nd, then 3rd vehicle. These things don't happen by 'mistake' as pretends with a smile. https://www.channel4.com/news/three-british-aid-workers-in-gaza-killed-in-israel-airstrike
