Microsoft recall is fucking insane.

Recall snapshots are kept on Copilot+ PCs themselves, on the local hard disk, and are protected using data encryption on your device and (if you have Windows 11 Pro or an enterprise Windows 11 SKU) BitLocker.

Your doing what? Microsoft wh-

Recall uses Copilot+ PC advanced processing capabilities to take images of your active screen every few seconds. [...]

[...] The default allocation for Recall on a device with 256 GB will be 25 GB, which can store approximately 3 months of snapshots. [...]

WHAT WHY NO ST-

Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers. That data may be in snapshots that are stored on your device, especially when sites do not follow standard internet protocols like cloaking password entry.

Microsoft please... th-the tech support scams... think about what happens if this gets bre-

Recall also does not take snapshots of certain kinds of content, including InPrivate web browsing sessions...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

It treats material protected with digital rights management (DRM) similarly; like other Windows apps such as the Snipping Tool, Recall will not store DRM content.

Ah, but of course. The DRM is protected...

Good morning, and welcome to Enshittification Tuesday. We've got quite a selection for your perusal today, and shockingly it isn't all related to AI.

We've got:

  • Microsoft adds AI spyware at the OS level

  • iTerm2 adds AI spyware at the Terminal level

  • FireTV interface has been sneakily tweaked to automatically subscribe users to new services when downloading certain apps (yes, there's a confirmation screen, but blink and you'll miss it & might get double-subscribed)

It's a ducking keyboard app. And it keeps popping up until I pick one. Guilting me into clicking "Yes".

Open AI asked Scarlet Johansson for her voice, and when she refused, they stole it anyway.

Gross as hell. What a slimy company.

Google announced client-side scanning for Android. I don't think there's any point in calling it otherwise, or discussing the alleged "usefulness" of this technical implementation.

@Mer__edith very aptly reminded, in her reaction, that the AI-powered scanning is proprietary and it's within Google's discretion what type of communication is flagged as problematic. Scams, today. What next? Reproductive rights? Labour organizing?

One thing that’s funny about and is I keep hearing the same thing. “Oh I use it for generic snippets, just common tasks and functions”.

The amusing thing about that is when I first started working with a app years ago there was already a solution to that problem. It was called “the PHP Cookbook” published by O’Reilly. I was told “oh we buy you a PDF copy and you just search for whatever you are trying to do and use that code. It saves a ton of time for junior programmers.”

Not only was it true, it did save me a ton of time and headaches, but we didn’t need to steal anything. The authors got paid, it worked offline, it didn’t require scraping the entirety of human knowledge to write or nuclear power plants worth of energy to distribute.

It also helped me learn. Since I would have a solid foundation to the solution, I felt more confident experimenting. I always had a known-functioning standard library solution as my base. So when something broke I knew where to start debugging.

Just an incredible thought that instead of paying $20 for a pdf once we decided this was the way to go.

Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.

sundogplanets,
@sundogplanets@mastodon.social avatar

A group of concerned astronomers, artists, and policy experts have come together and formed Kessler Rebellion. Our goal is to educate the public about what's happening in orbit and advocate for regulatory changes that will avoid Kessler Syndrome, which would destroy our ability to use satellites in Low Earth Orbit for decades to centuries.

So, over in the astronomy world there is some consternation about a tweet from eminent satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.

Apparently "Starlink Precipitation" is now a thing. And yes, you got that right, Starlink precipitation is pieces of Elon Musk's fucking internet satellites raining down from space.

With the disapplication of the Rwanda policy in Northern Ireland, we can see how the 1998 treaty practically limits the power of the UK executive

An encouraging argument for generative AI peaking and plateauing.

TLDR: Because generative AI models are trained by data, and the size of the training data sets is not continuing to grow at a consistent pace, we may not continue to see big advances in terms of what generative AI can do.

Good. Then we can get back to paying artists, writers, composers, photographers, designers…
