There's nothing inherently antisemitic about protesting to end a war. Arresting peaceful protesters on college campuses for civil disobedience is not a great look. Regardless of whether you agree with them or not.

On the flipside, chanting things like "yehuda yehuda," "we're all Hamas," or "Remember the 7th of October! That will happen not one more time, not five more times, not 10 more times, not 100 more times, not 1000 more times, but 10,000 times!" surely is all meant to be pirposely antisemitic.

Holding a sign that reads “Al-Qassam’s next target" with an arrow pointing to a group of Jews isn't anti-war or even anti-zionism. It's fucking crazy is what it is.

So stop strong arming protests. They're normal. Even if they have very fucked up elements in them.

Protestors, you got a 'nazi bar' problem and you should fix it or fuck off. There's no excuse for this shit.

🧵 Calling for the #genocide of the #Jews is a hot topic these days. This is primarily for non-Jews.

What are we really talking about when this gets said? We generally aren't covering some fascist saying literally that they want to kill all the Jews. That speech is not wildly popular at universities or during anti-#Israel protests which is where the controversy is coming up.

So I think it's fair to say literal calling for the mass death of Jews is non-controversively frowned upon. I'm sure there's some free speech absolutist out there but that's a different issue entirely.

What we're talking about in the current political moment is #palestinian supporters using more populist expressions like "From the River to the Sea" and similar expressions.

Let me tell you why I don't oppose the use of this call or chant.

People like to imagine that Europe no longer trades in ethnic cleansing but the drop in Jewish European populations from 1939 to 1945 is proportionally similar to the drop in Jewish European populations from 1970 to 2020. And the drop from 1939 to 2020 is astonishing.

And the change from almost no European Jews in 1170 to the vast majority of Jews living in Europe in 1880 to an even smaller proportion of Jews living in Europe in 2020 than in 1170 is pretty telling as well.

This would look even more stark if we did the middle east and north Africa. By a long shot.

Jews essentially are holed up in two countries and anything else is statistically insignificant.

And right now I'm teetering on packing it in. Twitter was shit but it was a better experience as a Jew.

This place is a deluge of hot garbage and so was twitter. But twitter had hundreds of thousands of Jews. Including our public intellectuals. Jews from all walks of life. Jews from many denominations. Jews from all over the world.

What does the fediverse offer in comparison? Mostly just the game of 'out the antisemite' which is boring AF.

The Israel/Gaza fighting is a human tragedy.

I see a lot of people talking about it.

Some are expressing very real pain over the gruesome Oct 7 Hamas massacres. Some are expressing very real pain over the growing civilian deaths and displacement in Gaza from the Israeli bombing campaign. Some for both of course.

But most people who aren't personally connected to this tragedy (particularly Palestinians and Jews) are using it as a foil for their ideological team. Like grim, ghoulish cheerleaders.

For this last category, if you have no posts about the 9k dead and more than 5 million displaced in Sudan in the past few months (or any other similar tragic conflict happening in the world) I think you're either Islamophobic or antisemitic depending on the team you're rooting against.

And you should stfu.

Primary use would be fun and leisure. Want to be able to have good control over human vs electric force to power down for excersize purposes. Not a commuter, not heavy shopping, or anything like that.
