i feel like “let us send everything you type to the cloud so we can do spellcheck for you!” is just a clear sign that society has gone wrong. we’ve been doing spellcheck fine without it for like. three decades
if you are part of a team that makes a free, open source program, and you write a comprehensive manual about how to do everything in that program, you are my hero and deserve to be feted
every time i see artists compare revenue from spotify vs bandcamp im struck by how bandcamp does allow streaming? and most artists put their whole albums on there to stream?
and yet the simple act of just having an option to buy an album means they make orders of magnitude more money on bandcamp
idk i just think its kinda funny to hear a wikipedia admin talk about how hard they try to get new editors to wikipedia after, what, a decade of alienating trans ppl and their allies, aka the fastest growing group of fastidious nerds in the world rn
imagining an alternate world where people ripped dvd and blu-ray menus as standard, so that you’d get ppl remuxing things to include their favorite menus
ok, but like, what if you WERE stuck in a groundhog day situation and it turned out the solution was the same loop you walked around naked the whole time for
I've got a proposal for how Amazon could improve their service: Instead of this heavy focus on delivering every package in under 24 hours even if this means they have to force their warehouse workers and delivery drivers to pee in bottles, Amazon goes back to delivering things on a 48-to-72-hour timeframe, but as a tradeoff they actually deliver the package instead of fucking lying and saying they did
@mcc@jplebreton a corollary to “any metric which becomes a target ceases to be a useful metric” is that executives only like metrics if they can turn them into targets
here's a fun trick to pull on a friend: bet them $100 you can achieve enlightenment before they can. then just sit back-- once they achieve it first, they'll stop caring about worldly things and never collect!
wait. i had an idea. what if i fundraise money from fundamentalists to build a noah’s ark theme park, but then it’s just like. a big boat for me to sail away on
Pondering the parallels between the Christian myth of Adam and Eve approaching a tree with a snake in it and attaining knowledge of good and evil, with the snake and the gained knowledge seen as evil; and the Buddhist myth (new to me) of Mucalinda, meaning the Buddha also sat under a tree with a snake and there also attained enlightenment but here the knowledge so gained is good and the snake is seen as a protector
Could invent some really fun heresies by developing this line of thought further
Went out to the drugstore and I was so so hype because it's FINALLY December 26 and for the first time since October I could go to the drugstore without hearing Christmas music. Walked in. The piped in music was a lady singing "I Believe In Santa Claus". There is no escape
Been getting this sense lately that the fediverse may be thinning out a bit, and in parallel getting a sense people I know are finally jumping to "bluesky" in numbers.
Trying to figure out exactly at what point I decide I'm willing to create a feed over there. My position has been "I'll post there when I don't have to use their servers to do it", but I continue to suspect this will literally never happen because their protocol is designed to look like federation without being ever federatable
@mcc the amount of ppl i’ve seen talking about making a bluesky account while really not wanting to actually use bluesky makes me feel like some sort of metaphor for broader capitalism but i’m not sure i can exactly suss it out
