online subscription to Channel 3 in Thailand is about $28 per year (USD i presume). that's really tempting even if i can't read the website. some of it HAS to have subs right?
note to self: next language in an alphabet i already know please.

Festival Online 2024 will be Weds 5th-19th June (starts & ends noon JST so effectively the 18th for UK).
It's a great opportunity to see Japanese films which can be hard to find.
I'm going to watch as many as I can and post brief thoughts under with the aim of helping those with busy lives choose one or two. Happy to have conversations as well.
Please follow the hashtag if you're interested.

Father of the Milky Way Railroad

Beautiful, poetic melodrama depicting a romanticised and idealised life of an idealistic young man who, after his death, became one of Japan's most loved poets and writers.
Now to read some of his writings while this is still fresh in my mind.

The Invitation

One of the four prize-winning short horror films in

Glad I watched it during the afternoon :) Got a jump scare from the sound, I was using headphones and it was Right There 😂
The ending brought it together and made it extra creepy.

Germany’s AfD is so extreme it was kicked out of the far-right grouping in the European Parliament last month, but Elon Musk thinks their policies “don’t sound extremist.” That’s because he’s also a fascist.

@parismarx First thought on skimming this was well he just got a whole fuck ton of people to read up on their policies.
His post feels calculated to me and even more dangerous than just agreeing with them.
The question and "Maybe I'm missing something" are engagement-driving language and he frames it as they're not extremist.

Accidentally ended up watching 3 series concurrently, started the 1st season of C-epic Joy of Life cause everyone is talking about it, realised i can subscribe to my 2nd favourite lakorn channel for £22/year, AND JFF+ online festival (in which I will attempt to watch 24 Japanese movies in 13 days) begins in a week.
Maybe it's a good thing I don't have a life?

@sheepchase i got so excited about there being horror in the JFF+ for you that i didn't notice they're all shorts. None of them nor the directors are in the MDL database. One is the winner of the inaugural Japan Horror Film Competition. I'm betting the rest are runners-up.
Anyway, I can manage short ones. Even if they are Japanese and Japanese horror is too good :)
Maybe one a day? You pick.

I made an MDL list to help me prioritise. Some of the films have reviews etc. https://mydramalist.com/list/47av2YNL

my brain so does not get on with the looped frenzied classical on-hold music for the GP. i don't think it's much of a stretch to say the composer did not intend for his work to be listened to this way.
please continue to hold while we scramble your brain

i have a song in English and a song in Thai going round in my head except my brain is making up somewhat Thai-sounding nonsense for all of the English one and maybe 80% of the Thai one. took a wee while to work out where this new "OST" was from 🙃

Last year's was really good so I'm maybe just a wee bit excited. It's a great opportunity to see Japanese films which can be hard to find.
I know all of you have lives and are busy but I can post about those I watch to help you pick one or two Please let me know if you are interested as it's better for me to save my energy than shout into the void.

the local GP practice was bought by a city centre one who've been slowly closing it down. now have to go into city centre for annual blood pressure check for medication. except they've also relocated their city centre practice to a posh bit so it's a not-cheap 36 minute bus ride in with a not-short walk either side and then more walking to get to any shops i can afford. i don't have the energy for this.
at least two other neighbouring practices have closed too, options to change are limited

let's make a voting list for on MDL, it will be fun even if most people are just voting for the 1 or 2 that they see.

attempts to rank the 5 (out of 23) i've seen so far... what have i done to myself? 🙃

i've seen three films in which involve arts and artists - The Lines that Define Me (sumi-e ink painting), Single8 (1978-era amateur film making) and Father of the Milky Way Railroad (idealised biography of an idealistic young man who, after his death, became one of Japan's most loved writers and poets) - and in every one, cinematography and story of the films themselves are shaped by the art form and style depicted.
Am more interested in the anime business one now.

this is about comedy series btw and nonsense is a compliment.

Fannish friends - I'm putting together one of those What was your favourite X, Y, Z calendar poll type thing to encourage engagement in my dreamwidth community next month.
Anyone want to help me improve it? I'm trying to steer away from the usual cliches.
It might be easier to do this on dreamwidth than fedi because of length, though I could turn it into graphics if need be.

film i watched last evening had animations which were just below my pre-seizure brain popcorn threshold. It wasn't the easiest film to follow either and it left me worn out.
Brain is extra foggy this morning. Might be weather but maybe the animations did more damage than i realised.
(So many GPs - you have this because you think you have this. So many times me - looks like that was ok. whew. Reality - lol no whomp.)
