VERYYY hot take but a lot of people on here are far more privileged than they seem to realize or are willing to admit. this is even a thing ive witnessed some jews on here do as well.

im a disabled queer jewish man from the south. i am visibly jewish both with stereotypical ashkenazi jewish features and wear a kippah. my jewish identity is visible to the world, and it has placed my life in danger at numerous times in my life even before i was a practicing jew. i have had to hide my kippah numerous times or just nod along with people being extremely antisemitic due to the risk i was placed in. my synagogue has faced numerous violent threats and recently faced a bomb threat. ive been to synagogues in the south and had to be escorted by armed guards there, not because i wanted to but because without them being present people would literally firebomb the synagogue and have done so before.

i see people talk about stuff with a level of privilege that is very visible and its infuriating. i do not have the luxury to just leave my state, and whenever you say that "oh just let the south secede" you are basically sentencing me and those around me to our demise

or when i see people talk about just not voting over frustration with the government. ive been consistently failed as a low income southerner by my own government and have had to fight a broken system at numerous times. but just.... refusing to vote? for such absurd reasons? just reeks of so much privilege its unreal. if you think shit is terrible, just fucking wait under fascism!

or violent revolution.............. when people see the opportunity to massacre me and my community they will and i highly doubt people will step up to protect us.

This Vienna street isn’t “closed” because cars have been removed. It has successfully been “opened” to everything else, to a diverse and invigorated civic life, because cars have been replaced by a multitude of wonderful things.

Language matters.

As always, domestic abuse is the flagship infosec threat model, the one where the victim has the least resources, the least recourse, where they're closest to immediate physical harm.

That this industry has failed at and mostly abandoned the idea of even pretending to try dealing with a threat model that's difficult and unprofitable and mostly hurts women is not news, but this new Windows Recall feature is next-level professional negligence.

no, mastodon.social is not mass banning pro-palestinian speech. they are banning people for being antisemites and engaging in holocaust inversion as well as breaking german law.

My 17-year-old is going to be done with school in a few days and has not been able to land a summer job. He currently works a couple of Sundays a month doing live sound at a church. I’ve advised him to take his résumé around to other churches to see if he can get a gig on his off weeks or possibly get on a sublist. Would anyone on here happen to know of other types of establishments that might have a need for such skills for hire? He has also done some paid and unpaid intern work in local recording studios and recently assisted with a live performance recording. He has a good résumé for someone his age and is very mature and responsible.

You cannot separate the ongoing fascination with creating femme AI servants from the ongoing efforts to restrict reproductive and trans rights. They are both part of a concerted effort to equate feminity with servitude, and to maintain caretaking as free and unwaged labor.

I think it's particularly fortuitous that this week's theme for #TuneTuesday is #StorySong, as it is Martin Carthy's birthday today, and he is a great performer and interpreter of the folk songs of the islands of Britain and Ireland. Here's one such song where he tells the tale of an ill-fated voyage to Norway.

I’m probably starting an argument by replying to a faculty listserv thread about “good” uses of with estimates of the environmental costs of AI usage:

  • Having a single 10-50 question text conversation uses about as much energy as charging a smartphone [1]
  • Generating a single image uses about 500 mL freshwater [2]

Free things always have a cost. We should ask ourselves who is paying

Take a break from the world's problems for one day. Turn the camera of your mind toward those things which restore and inspire you. Those things are also true, and also part of the real world. Even fantasy and fiction is created by real humans, by miraculous and unique minds unlike any other.

Your eyes are not "open" if they are ONLY open to troubles.

This lovely dark blue Roman glass plate was found in a 5th century AD tomb at Niizawa Senzuka-kofun Tumulus Cluster, Nara, in Japan.

The dish was possibly produced in a workshop on the western side of the Euphrates and before the plate reached Japan, the inner surface became decorated, with a bird, horse, person, and plants. These figures were drawn in a Central Asian style and were likely the product of the Sasanian Empire. From there it was imported to Japan.

I keep going on about internet search, but it's fascinating to me. I have lived through an age without it, then watched geekdom awkwardly birth it, watched Google turn it into a pinnacle of knowledge-seeking that seemed to make human memory obsolete and earn a near-deserved monopoly, and then the same company, as gradually as the proverbial boiled frog, via the irresistible force of shareholder greed, render their name-making masterpiece so useless it was as though it had become uninvented.

mishellbaker,
@mishellbaker@wandering.shop avatar

I use it so much less, now. What will people do who don't remember what it was like to have to just... know stuff and remember it?

I am genuinely fascinated, as I have never seen one of mankind's greatest inventions go away for no good reason before. A lot of what my generation and those before believed about how innovation and "the market" works is just turning out to be so untrue.

Having established that dandelion seed heads are definitely NOT known as DANDELION CLOCKS by everyone I have a follow on question...

What DO you know them as?

Chatting to people already I have had FLUFFS (Lithuania) and WINDY PUFFS (Canada) both of which are SUPERB.

Are there any others? Will there be enough to make a World Map of Dandelion Names?! 😃

Places, names & any other trivia welcome!

On the topic of antisemitism and the Western left: One of the reasons that Jews are disappointed in liberal or progressive groups, who we previously considered allies, is because in the face rising antisemitism we are being 'splained on what antisemitism is (or isn't), how we should be feeling, and being gaslit and suggested the we are misinterpreting or exaggerating the behavior of others. It's exhausting.

A rare silver lining to severe cuts in local council budgets: for the last few years Eastbourne have stopped spraying our streets and I love this time of year, flowers reclaiming the streets everywhere.

Orange flowers. Again, should look up name.
