Wow. How entitled do you have to be to keep arguing to a court that you are too busy to testify midweek because of childcare when a) your husband, the other parent of your child, is on the scene and b) you have plenty of money for a sitter and c) probably have a nanny? Ivanka, like her father, clearly thinks legal obligations are for other people. Appellate court didn’t buy it. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/nov/03/ivanka-trump-must-testify-trump-organization-fraud

@annaleen nothing to do with security, they are trying to catch typos. The more sophisticated ones prevent pasting too in a variety of ways

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

ferrix, (edited )
@ferrix@mastodon.online avatar

@TechConnectify I am canceling all my other streams one at a time but losing YT premium would be unthinkable. Even if they kept raising the price. The only thing they could do to lose me would be to add back in some kind of platform-served adverts (hey, Prime and Paramount did it)

Yes, this is surely “helpful content” from a posting farm that keeps pushing my site rankings into the tank.

At this point, I’m thinking of pulling the plug on About Chromebooks as soon as January 1 arrives.

Between algo updates, crappy sites gaming the system and a 60% drop in ad rates in 2 years, I’ve had enough.

Ad revenues this month: About $820.
Ad revenues the same period in 2021? Over $3,000.

The latter is more than enough for me to pay my bills. The former? Nope.

ferrix,
@ferrix@mastodon.online avatar

@kevinctofel this will be a sad loss of a great resource. IMO keep the domain registration at least-- maybe we'll see a new age of content quality control and the site can come back (if we still use chromebooks in the future from our flying cars)

Bumblebees learn by observing other bees. Bumblebees, like ants, may even teach each other. In a University of London experiment a bee watched a "fake bee" (a fuzzy yellow & black orb on a stick) pushing a yellow ball into a circle for a sugar water reward. The bee copied this action.

When a nest mate was introduced, they learned by watching the bee trained in the previous experiment. I find the idea of a "fake bee" adorable.

It will be sickening but not surprising if the House Republicans install as Speaker an active participant in the effort to overturn the lawful 2020 Presidential election. The majority of them who were in the House then voted to reject the electors submitted by Arizona or Pennsylvania, even though there was no evidence of any factual basis for doing so.

I like Parallels for Mac, but I don't appreciate their refusal to ship security updates after a year unless I "upgrade" to their yearly subscription model.

Parallels' model seems to be that with every new version of macOS you should have to pay them again, or run a product with known vulnerabilities.

I'm really sick of how everything has to be a continuing revenue stream for software companies, and it steams me that we still don't have any basic rights or guarantees defined as buyers and users of software.

ferrix,
@ferrix@mastodon.online avatar

@briankrebs it's to the extent that companies that don't charge annually are considered strange or unsustainable.

Software margins are great, take it from a software maker. If you can't offer ongoing security without charging your old customers you are doing it wrong.

There is some confusion about Meadows "flipping."

https://abcnews.go.com/US/chief-staff-mark-meadows-granted-immunity-tells-special/story?id=104231281

Immunity is something else: This means essentially that he was forced to testify.

It works like this: If the DOJ gives use immunity, nothing he says can be used against him, so it's no longer possible to invoke the 5th Amendment.

(It's late so I'm not sure I explained it well.)

See:
https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution-conan/amendment-5/immunity#:~:text=“Transactional”%20immunity%20means%20that%20once,from%20or%20obtained%20because%20of

I ended up modding my electric bike to add a surfboard rack. The throttle and back brake are on opposite sides so it was really sketchy trying to balance while holding a surfboard and braking with the front because it would shift the center of balance super far forward.

Curious how a JIT compiler speeds up performance? This is a prototype to get an idea. Slick! https://youtube.com/watch?v=8mxubNQC5O8&si=RlYsNVGNCRgoXkft

ferrix,
@ferrix@mastodon.online avatar

@kevinctofel notably, JIT compilers are apparently a source of security flaws. iOS Lockdown Mode disables it for that very reason. Depending on one's threat profile this may not matter at all of course.

Myself, I'd rather be a bit slower than hacked because lots of ppl depend on me being secure :)
