A study by German economic think tank DIW has found that the does not require an Russian gas imports and a ban on them wouldn't endanger the bloc's energy security, dpa reports (in German): https://www.rnd.de/wirtschaft/kein-russisches-gas-mehr-importe-aus-russland-laut-studie-nicht-notwendig-2K5SKTH2RZL5TGV4CKWUG6H3BU.html

This is a pretty amazing development, if you consider how dependent on Russian gas the EU, and countries such as Germany in particular, seemed just three years ago.

The situation in Germany's region right now is giving me a strong deja vu from three years ago, when another hilly area experienced unusually heavy rainfall that lead to devastating floods. I really hope we don't see the same kind of disaster happen as we did in the Ahrtal 2021. At least residents and emergency services should be sensitized to what could happen.

The party’s top candidate in the elections, Maximilian Krah, canceled plans to speak after an assistant was arrested on suspicion of spying for China earlier this week, AP reports:

On Wednesday, Climeworks made a surprising move away from hard tech and into carbon trading with the launch of an offshoot called Climeworks Solutions. Under the new banner, it will purchase carbon removal credits from other providers, package them into portfolios that include its own direct air capture credits, and sell the bundles to buyers looking for “high quality” carbon removal.

Pennsylvania governor has unveiled a plan to fight climate change, saying he will back legislation to make power plant owners in the nation’s third-biggest energy-producing state pay for their greenhouse gas emissions and require utilities to buy more electricity from renewable sources.

Such legislation would make Pennsylvania the first major fossil fuel-producing state in the U.S. to adopt a carbon-pricing program. But it is drawing fierce opposition from business.

“Humanity has finally done what is long, long, long overdue,” Wopke Hoekstra, European Union commissioner for climate action, said. After nearly 30 years of talking about carbon pollution, climate negotiators in a key document explicitly took aim at what’s trapping the heat: the burning of coal, oil and natural gas.

But U.N. climate chief Simon Stiell cautioned people that what they adopted was a “climate action lifeline, not a finish line.”

To meet the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, nine major Asian economies must massively ramp up the share of electricity they get from renewable energy by the end of the decade, from the current 6% to at least 50%, according to a report by @AgoraEW released Wednesday. :
