🤔 Hmmm #️⃣test

fnxweb,

@cheeaun This does appear to do … something. But what way does the emoji codepoint “begin with” a hash? A codepoint is just a number, so we're at least taking encoding, not codepoints. Some special HTML entity? It's not directly UTF-8 at that won't “start” with a legal hash.

I can only assume that this glyph comes from using a standard hash followed by a enable-emoji variant-form code. In which case, yeah I guess that makes it a hashtag. But how does it then match the pure text on search?

Swift/Kelce poll!

[OK, let’s assume we’re all hip, postmodernly-cynical, high-toned culture vultures. Poll votes are anonymous so you can shamelessly reveal your innermost pop-culture feelings here.]

So, Taylor&Travis romance & right-wing meltdown, whattaya say? [obvs, multiple choice] [boost for more fun]

fnxweb,

@timbray Obviously heard of Swift, but honest Travis who?

trying competitive for the first time ever because a friend needs partners in crime and I like playing with them.

1 of 7 placement matches done. My Competitive Rank is UNTESTED

That means I haven't met a worthy opponent yet, right? 😆

fnxweb,

@InfiniteHench Did you mean one of seven? You need to complete a full 7 matches to get an initial tank (and repeat the process each season). You should at that point get given a rank. But I only ever do comp now for the seasonal challenge, and didn't even bother with that last season.

BIG NEW SEASONAL STORY BEAT TODAY.

Guides up on YouTube of course. There's a cutscene. Consider changing out of your Halloween outfit. Or not. I'm not your parent. 😄

fnxweb,

@InfiniteHench When did that appear, then? I was on for a while after reset and didn't get anything trigger (even went to the Helm in case the last radio message had turned up).

Presage is the weekly exotic mission.

If you haven't run this, you absolutely need to. It's one of the best missions they've ever built, and the (now craftable!) reward Dead Man's Tale is an excellent, unique scout rifle.

fnxweb,

@InfiniteHench
Do it solo for the first run, if you can.

With the lights off.

fnxweb,

@InfiniteHench I did manage to solo it first run as I recall, but it involved many, many deaths!

Anyone know how often the Legend Haunted Sector rotates?

Between yesterday afternoon and evening I saw all 4, but that was in between doing other activities, helping friends, eating, etc.

fnxweb,

@InfiniteHench I believe they have said it rotates every two hours.

LOL. Someone found a glitch to yeet Crota off the map with a finisher.

TL;DW (4 minutes), but definitely skip to the end to see this gloriousness: Get a bunch of knights finishable. Bait them all to far mid, near the out of bounds ledge. Start finishing them, get lucky when Crota gets yeeted off the map along with one of them.

fnxweb,

@britt @InfiniteHench It's funny to watch but almost impossible to pull off. One clanmate did it on his second Hunter attempt after many, many Titan attempts (and got his Master Triumph out of it) but then failed dismally to repeat it while we all sat giggling like schoolgirls at the back of the map 😄

Another tried and failed for a couple of hours (while waiting for a free raid slot).

The questions I want answered for any cloud-based password manager:

· Is its encryption approach sane?
· Does the server have access to any plaintext data?
· Can the server manipulate the data?
· Are users being aided in creating safe credentials?
· Do encryption keys or their components ever leave user’s computer?
· Are there encryption backdoors meant to aid account recovery for example?
· Is the client-side software safe from web-based attacks?
· Are there precautions in place to avoid filling in passwords on the wrong websites?
· Are there precautions in place to avoid filling in passwords on compromised websites without user’s knowledge?
· …

The questions media coverage tends to focus on:

· Are there plain text passwords in memory that someone with administrator privileges on user’s machine could read out?

fnxweb,

@WPalant I would have thought ticked all those boxes, thought it can be a pain for non web passwords. I use a separate encrypted notes app for non-web myself (which also ticks most of the boxes — I trust).

fnxweb,

@WPalant Interesting, thanks. I do use sync (and a master password)n with 2FA.

What do you mean by “entering the password for your Firefox account (which also happens to be your Firefox Sync encryption secret)”? I rarely need my account account password, and it's not my master password.

  • fnxweb,

@AnnaAnthro I don't really get the maths here. The logic for the distance presumes a point mass at the centre of the Earth, but it's not a point. If you followed the logic, then almost at the centre you'd have a stupendous weight, but I think you'd weigh next to nothing.

Mass above you doesn't count (it will be pulling you up), so I always thought your weight would go down as you descended. Maybe the extra equator mass doesn't count as “above”?

    Happy Autumnal Equinox!

Only six months until there is this much daylight again.

(And a special hello to the reply guys already typing “only in the northern hemisphere”.)

    fnxweb,

    <pedant>
If it's the light & day-length thing you're after, the Autumnal Equilux isn't till Monday in (most of?) the UK.

Outside of the Equator, an Equinox is purely mathematical / astronomical because of differences caused by latitude and diffraction, and the fact that we see daylight when the sun is only peeking over the horizon, not with its centre there. (The diffraction means we see it when it's not actually there)

(Yes, I keep both in my calendar 🤓)

Data from the glamorous Euro-satellite “Gaia” is used to estimate the Milky Way’s mass… and comes up with a figure that’s an order of magnitude off from consensus estimates! (10¹¹ solar masses vs 10¹²)

Serious question… why is buying a particular issue of a digital magazine or newspaper not a thing?

Like if I wanted to read just one particular article in paper form I could go to the store and buy only that one issue. But online I have to either deal with a paywall or sign up for a full subscription?

    Why??

    fnxweb,

@mariyadelano I think Byline Times lets you buy specific (digital) back issues.
