Got any big 🌳 in your neighborhood? Let's see 'em. We love a nice tree.

@gbhnews We have a lovely old White Pine in our suburban backyard. Without cutting it down and counting its rigs, we have to guess its age - it could be close to 100. It's about 2 feet across at the base.

@trebach@functional.cafe avatar

@gbhnews This tree is at least one foot across and so tall it doesn't even fit in the frame. For reference, the tree in the foreground is much closer and 7 feet tall. I would have moved to get it out of shot but the tree on the opposite side has poison ivy growing on it :(

Happy Earth Week! I had a wide-ranging conversation recently on @gbhnews "Greater Boston" with Mass. DEP commissioner Bonnie Heiple about pollution regulations in environmental justice areas, landfills, sewer overflows, PFAS and other toxic chemicals, recycling, and food waste. (You can watch the full interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdL48j-daEQ&list=PLMQKK3_a14M2m83hj5Zt5xv0dgdu7I8PM&index=8). We chatted here about a state website I use all the time to figure out what can be recycled. Just Google "Recyclopedia."

NEW: More than two dozen are now resting and recuperating at all four of our shelters following their emergency flight from Texas to yesterday afternoon. The pups had been living at a small rescue organization whose owner no longer was able to care for them 1/

MSPCAAngell,
@MSPCAAngell@mastodon.boston avatar

The dogs range in age from 12-weeks to 10-years-old and are mostly mixes of large breeds, including Pit Bulls, Labrador Retrievers, Hounds, and Catahoulas. They’ll be available for adoption following their state-mandated quarantine and after getting any medical care they need.

Stay tuned to our socials for updates on their status! Keiley estimates caring for the new arrivals will cost roughly $5,000. Those who would like to donate to help offset that cost may do so at http://www.mspca.org/donate.

Here's the container ship Ever Fair, tied up this morning on the Reserve Channel in South Boston.

Boston Towboat's A team (Independence, Justice, Freedom & Liberty) helped guide her out for her next stop, New York.

At 1095 feet long, the Ever Fair is slightly bigger than the Dali, the ship that hit the Key Bridge in Baltimore last month.

Speaking of "American" and "going to see him up front," our friend C.J. Albertson, the self-titled "best downhill runner in the world," is entered. Albertson ran the downhills from Hopkinton to Framingham so hard in 2021 that he was out of sight of the lead pack, and even though he visibly flagged climbing through Newton, they didn't catch him until Heartbreak. Albertson is also the 50km WR holder and ran a PR 2:10 at the Olympic Trials in February.

Protocol note: in , the pro athletes have name bibs. Most have family names ("Lemma", "Geay", "Lokedi", "Teshome") but if you're a former Boston winner, you get your given name on the bib ("Evans", "Hellen", "Edna", "Caroline", or just "Des"). Win in Boston, and you're on a first-name basis with the whole region.

Endangered North Atlantic right whales continue to be killed by entanglement in fishing gear and vessel strikes. Four right whales have been killed in the first few months of 2024. But a wave of misinformation online is blaming offshore wind farms for the deaths. I spoke about this on @gbhnews "Greater Boston" with CAI reporter @evezuckoff and Mark Baumgartner of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. https://youtube.com/watch?v=muYdNp3w9D8

All eyes are turned towards the skies today (behind eclipse glasses!) for the total stretching from Mexico, over the States, and up to Canada.

On May 10, 1994, witnessed the most complete solar eclipse since 1806, and Illinois Public Media was there to capture the incredible event on camera. Check out this video capturing the path of totality over Illinois.

Every night during the winter, as many as 15,000 crows arrive in Lawrence to roost for the night. It's a scene worthy of a Hitchcock movie. And now, the Lawrence crow roost is a test case for government-funded research on new 3D imaging technology. Here's my @gbhnews video, audio and print stories about this crazy scene: https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2024-03-27/thousands-of-crows-in-lawrence-are-a-marvel-of-nature-and-test-case-for-new-imaging-technology

Dozens of species — ranging from moths to orchids — may soon be added to Massachusetts’ endangered species list. The list is reviewed about every four years to remove species that have either sufficiently recovered or disappeared, and add species that face growing threats. In several cases this year, the proposed additions recognize the discovery of species that were thought to have disappeared from the state decades ago. Here's my @gbhnews story on the proposed additions https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2024-03-13/bats-bees-and-beyond-proposed-additions-to-the-mass-endangered-species-list
