Dear Friends,

1/2 The USGS maintains a system of flood gauges to, among other things, help forecast flood risk. Today's #NorEaster brings heavy rains on top of early snow into #NewEngland. The Black River in #Vermont has only one flood gauge (NOVS1) in North Springfield, far downstream where flooding has now closed Rt 100 and Rt 103 in Ludlow where last summer's big storm caused millions in damage.

In 1998, Rita Hester, a transgender woman, was murdered in her apartment in Allston, MA.

The case was never solved.

Hester's murder inspired Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual vigil.

For Hester’s family and LGBTQ+ people in Boston and across the world, her murder also represents the disregard police and media show for Black trans murder victims, the unsolved case casting a long shadow on Boston detectives.

The American Archive of Public Broadcasting, spearheaded by @gbhnews in Boston to preserve and make available public funded programming from around the country, now hosts more than 7000 public television and radio programs available to stream through the website, with more than 40000 hours of programming archived and available to researchers and educators through the Library of Congress and GBH itself.

As the weather gets colder, sea turtles are once again washing up on the beaches of Cape Cod Bay. The turtles get stuck as they try to migrate to warmer waters in the south. Volunteers that find the stunned turtles bring them to the New England Aquarium Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy. A national network of bereavement programs for children called Camp Erin has supported grieving kids for over 20 years.
