The Coca-Cola Company is the largest consumer-facing global seller of plastics, producing 134 billion – almost one quarter (23%) – of the world’s PET plastic bottles.

Great question. It's my limited understanding that you're right -- in a full LCA, the downstream effects of separating mixed plastics are worse than not recycling at all.

Most recycled plastic is PET, but that's just one kind of plastic. For downgraded uses (think the spongy material at the base of many playgrounds), a mix of plastics may be repurposed, but for true recyclability, it's just not economically or environmentally feasible. How could it be? It's so energy-intensive.

Went to the beach for precisely that reason yesterday!

If we connected more to the natural world, maybe we’d be more motivated to preserve it.

@alberto_cottica Dual action effort: individuals understand how their voices affect the whole, and support from institutions to encourage more pro social behavior. Gotta go hand in hand, right?

giamora,

@alberto_cottica @tgoorden I agree wholeheartedly. That's behavioral economics in action. There are many (anti-capitalist) paths to better climate futures.

Science is for everyone, but not everyone can see themselves there.

That’s one reason I love this beautifully illustrated, FREE to download comic book developed by Flint teachers, artists & plant biologists. Through classroom modules w real plants, high school students learn how traits evolve over time through natural selection w characters who look like more of them. And that matters toward building a more inclusive STEM future. https://hioh.education/monkeyflowers-graphic-novel

giamora,

@Sheril

This is so neat! Books, TV, and film play a huge role in inspiring young people to go into the STEM fields, and having more inclusive and accurate representation can only foster more ideas, more solutions, and more equity -- and hopefully a planet we can all cohabitate on peacefully.
