We now live in a society where a man can literally assault a woman in front of the world and then claim he's the one being attacked.

Wow.

Throw him in jail already, Spain.

@jmcrookston The international community should pressure him to step down, and apologise.

    @cpoliticditto It's frustrating. For years we heard about Mickey Mouse news and Mickey Mouse courses, but we should have taken a look at the fox instead. It's the fox, not the mouse, that we should have worried about.

    I'm absolutely furious! NZ govt just scrapped all remaining covid protections (mask mandate in health care, isolation period). The PM acknowleded the concerns of disabled and high-risk people and then kicked those concerns in the gutter, leaving those behind that needed the protections most. 🤬
    Ka pai Team of 5 million.
    So is everyone U30 at least getting access to boosters now? Cause that's all that's left.
    Put on your masks and good luck out there! 😷

    harmonicarichard,
    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @ConnyChiwa Everyone can be disabled by COVID. Everyone is at risk. We need everyone to understand that they are at risk from being disabled by Long COVID. If we only worry about the vulnerable we give an excuse for "normal" people to be apathetic. This isn't right. Everyone needs to realise the danger they're in.

    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @ConnyChiwa It's interesting, because recently I have seen more people tooting about how the pandemic isn't over, on Mastodon and the fediverse. I see Twitter is still full of people keeping watch on the pandemic situation.

    “Clive” is a kind of weird name in the US

    Every so often, a service worker asks if my name is pronounced “C-Live”

    As if I were a DJ or something

    I’m tempted to roll with it

    harmonicarichard,
    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @clive I asked Bard about you (or at least your name:

    "Clive is not short for anything. It is a standalone name that comes from the Old English word "clif," meaning "cliff." It was originally a surname, but it became a given name in the 19th century.

    There are some people who believe that Clive is short for "Clifford," but this is not the case. Clifford is a different name with a different meaning. Clifford comes from the Old English words "clif" and "ford," meaning "cliff ford."

    Clive is a relatively rare name, but it has become more popular in recent years. Some famous people with the name Clive include Clive Owen, Clive Barker, and Clive Davis."

    @baldur If people can't find the time to create content, what makes them think that people will find the time to read that AI generated content? We're already drowning in choice, without making AI generated crap, a bigger part of the problem. I love AI, but for things that can take a human months to do. AI that learns from humans is good, for media asset management, for example.

    Could Norwegian Electric Planes Be a Model for the Rest of the World?

    The global aviation industry has a massive climate problem, and many are looking to Norway for a possible solution. The country wants all short-haul flights to be conducted with electric planes as early as 2040. But doubts persist about whether the technology will be ready.

    Heat index in Middle East reached 152F. Very near limit of human endurance. One day, I predict, there will be an extreme event with temps even higher than that in an area with little to no air conditioning, and hundreds of thousands or more will die.

    harmonicarichard,
    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @lauren Before the last three years 40°c was seen as extreme heat. Now it has become tame, compared to 50°c expected in some places. I read about TDF riders with ice vests yesterday.

    @lauren When I read a single article mentioning the effect that rocket launches can have on the stratosphere in regards to global warming I thought "We need to reduce rocket launches until we understand the environmental impact of water and other substances in the stratosphere, as a result of launches.

    If you're worried that temperatures are several degrees above the 1980-2010 average, keep in mind that they're several degrees below the 2030-2060 average.

    @jbqueru Don't give people an excuse to do nothing. I think we should be working to reverse the trend, rather than making assumptions about the future. I go several days a week without driving. My weekend sports are cycling and walking, from home, to reduce my cabron footprint (intentional spelling). The temperatures are already too high for normal people to cope with.

    There are reports that engagement on Threads is plummeting. Bluesky is having big problems. Mastodon hasn't quite achieved liftoff. And Twitter is way down. What we're witnessing is the end of mass social media. As someone who uses it to promote my work, I'm less than thrilled. On the other hand, I'm sure it's better for our mental health.

    harmonicarichard,
    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar

    @dankennedy_nu Threads was built on the premise that people want to see adverts, rather than socialise with friends. I am reassured to hear that engagement is tanking. P.S. It's the weekend, social media is used by people bored at work, due to design flaws.

    harmonicarichard,
    @harmonicarichard@techhub.social avatar
