What's a good/cheap host with easy/automatic https cert setup for static sites? Netlify but without the surprise charges?

Do people in accessibility who vaunt "inclusive AI" realise they are just doing PR?

Like, I honestly don't care if there's one or two specific uses of AI that might help someone vulnerable in some small way. You can use the barrel of a gun to prize open a drain cover and save a kitten.

The history of AI will be the history of an irresponsible tech obliterating accountability & eventually meaning itself. That won't be good for anyone. Stop using disabled people to will that into reality.

Please, liberals. Stop the thinkpieces on why Mastodon is bad. I get it, you prefer the for-profit social media where you already have clout and where "progressiveness" is telling people off for writing "folks" instead of "folx" instead of a genuinely different model for web-based interaction.

Okay... so why is my low specificity * margin overridding my higher specificity :root margin? Am I losing my mind? As you can see, no cascade layers are involved.

Gov.uk website: "we have signed you out for your security"

Me: clicks sign in link

Me: not prompted with re-entry of password, just takes me in automatically

Great, thanks so much, I feel really secure and not at all like my time is being wasted.

I would like to join @ellyloel in willing the term "web designer" back into existence. Personally, I hate how "frontend developer" became a thing and suddenly someone else was responsible for design. "You can code? You're a developer, put the typography and the colors down!" People can do more than one thing sometimes. Not always.

New WCAG just dropped!

Particularly interested in the "focus appearance" SC that mandates a 2px+ focus outline/style. https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG22/#focus-appearance #a11y

For conferences, I typically write a new talk each time. This means I have multiple talks I have only given once but would be happy to again. Let me know if you are interested in me speaking at your conference with:

 • The one where I talk about how capitalism is completely destroying the web (which certain civil servants were not allowed to see)
 • The one where I talk about the time I forced everyone to switch off JavaScript to view my website (in which I may confuse JavaScript with Covid)

I've taken to using down arrows in my code comments because it makes it explicit which line I'm talking about. Anybody do anything similar?

.skip-link {
/* ↓ move the link off the page */
transform: translateY(-100%);
}

Earnest thanks to everyone who has bought something from https://webbed-briefs.teemill.com/collection/new in the last few days. It's making a difference to me both mentally and fiscally, during a weird time.

So... I don’t believe in binary gender roles or identities any more than I believe in God or fairies, or subscribe to them any more than I do—I don't know—some shit magazine like the Spectator. I see myself as “male” as much as I see myself as English: I just happen to have been placed there. It is not a source of pride, joy, comfort or anything really. It’s just an arbitrary designation. Is that a common thing among cis and straight men?

Another bizarre pattern I keep seeing a lot of is having multiple skip links to different parts of the page. Total overkill. If you actually use headings, there's no real need.

The best tech-related / tech-adjacent community is the web one. Frontend and web standards. It's so not even close it's a joke. Imagine there being a Beyond Tellerrand or like a @mia of, like, fintech or AI or something. Pffff.

I'm been think a lot about how real time text communication is inherently toxic. "Social media" that consists of messages one loads and downloads periodically (slowly) would be clunky in the best possible way. https://mastodon.social/@Daojoan/111753344401612210

I'm writing about the <article> element now. To preempt myself, I just want to say: it's completely useless. I never use it. Why? Because it's designed to represent an independent piece of content BUT since the document outline algorithm has never been implemented and the element (inevitably) appears as part of a larger web page, it should be introduced with an <h2> heading. BUT it makes no sense to head an "independent, distributable" piece of content with a subsection heading. Trash 0/5.
