Har, har. Ms. Anderson spent several of her childhood years in the UK, and has frequently worked there professionally. Her English accent is legit, if posh, and as natural as her American voice. But does no one remember the X-Files, which she started working on in her early twenties?

The next time you see high gas prices, remember that Exxon posted $9.1 billion in earnings for the third quarter of this year. The money is coming out of consumers’ pockets and going back to Exxon’s wealthy shareholders, to which it gave $8.1 billion in Q3.

Less sublime than Prof. Harold Hill's hope and prayer, "for a Hester to win just one more "A"," from Meredith Willson's, Sadder-But-Wiser-Girl-For-Me:

"I snarl, I hiss: How can ignorance be compared to bliss?
I spark, I fizz for the lady who knows what time it is.
I cheer, I rave for the virtue I'm too late to save
The sadder-but-wiser girl for me."

No, sirree, that "hinge date" was just an ass.

Someone asked me what I think is going on with Trump's lawyers attacking the clerk.

Yesterday I said this:

"It's hard to tell what is going on with that. My best guess is that Trump's lawyers are fatigued, know they are losing, and are getting weird and paranoid."

Judge Engoron, who sees it all up close, said there is misogyny.

I just saw a picture of the clerk and I have revised my opinion.

The judge may be right . . .

This is Trump. His lawyers will still try to provoke Engoron into committing reversible error. That it won't work is not part of Trump's mindset.

How to describe that group's behavior: ignorant, rude, humiliating, intimidating, threatening, arrogant, entitled, and illegal.

I dislike it when restaurants automatically add a gratuity. (It's always advertised on the menu.) I prefer to give it directly to a server, in cash, owing to widespread fears of wage and tip theft. But not paying the bill is not paying the bill. It's wrong. If you don't like the food or service, don't go there again.

Gun nuts get very upset when you mislabel an AR-15 as an assault rifle. So to avoid any controversy, please refer to the weapon using its proper technical classification, which is a mass murder rifle.

huntingdon, (edited )
@huntingdon@mstdn.social avatar

@lowqualityfacts

For the hyper-technical, an AR-15 "style" rifle, without modifications, is not select fire. It's only a semi-automatic, so it's not an assault rifle according to the US Army.

But that's irrelevant to its capacity to inflict mass civilian casualties. It can accommodate a 30-round magazine, fire more than 60 rounds a minute, and its ammunition carries such a punch, it can liquify organs. No tasteful little holes to patch up.

It’s important that the new speaker fought to overturn the 2020 election. It’s also important that his role was fairly small.

In agreeing to drop out of the Speaker race before a floor vote, Tom Emmer will merely have to pay a small fine, perform 100 hours of community service and write a letter of apology.

I may be confusing some of the news today.

huntingdon,
@huntingdon@mstdn.social avatar

@mattblaze

You might be confusing what no one knows yet - how much Ellis, Chesebro, and Powell have to say to prosecutors, in exchange for their non-custodial sentences - with whatever your desires are.

georgetakei, to random

Now it looks like the No. 3 Republican in the House, Tom Emmer, is the new nominee for Speaker. This comes after McCarthy was deposed, and Scalise and Jordan both failed to get to 217 votes. Emmer asked for a roll call vote among his conference, and he looks like he is still more than 20 votes short. And look, Democrats would work with Emmer if he would agree to bring the budget and Ukrainian funding to the floor for a vote. But so far, he doesn’t want to dance with any Democrats. A bipartisan solution remains elusive, so the Speaker’s chair remains empty.

Donald Trump is good at destroying things: Tom Emmer's candidacy for Speaker, for example. Building things? Meh.

In the J6 DOJ trial (the big one) yesterday was Trump's deadline for filing pretrial motions.

(See attached minute order)

No surprise, his lawyers filed a bunch of motions just before the deadline.

Here's the thing about defense motions in criminal proceedings: Defendants are given lots of leeway to file motions that don't have a chance. The lawyers run into trouble only if they lie or misrepresent facts.

This is because of how much is at stake in criminal cases.

1/

huntingdon,
@huntingdon@mstdn.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield

"[Trump's] lawyers put a lot of time into this." These motions also look like they spent a lot of time taking dictation from Donald. These are political and electioneering statements as much as they are legal motions.

huntingdon,
@huntingdon@mstdn.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield

I did not say he dictated all of it, or that they didn't correct his spelling. Read a few pages of his Selective Prosecution motion.

Now that the billionaire is letting her freak flag fly, more of what Ms. Rowling has in common with Donald Trump will come out.

Trump couldn’t do it. He couldn’t obey a simple gag order not to continue to threaten court staff. Judge Engoron was furious at Trump for doxxing a court clerk of his, and he ordered Trump to take down the post and stop the harassing. But Trump left the post up on a campaign website, and now the judge is rightfully furious. The campaign calls it an “oversight” but it sure feels like a direct violation of the order. Sanctions are likely, stay tuned…

huntingdon,
@huntingdon@mstdn.social avatar

@georgetakei

For purposes of appeal, Engoron temporarily accepted defense counsel's improbable argument that the offending comment remained on Trump's campaign website for two weeks by mistake. He won't accept that excuse again.

That helps him establish that any sanctions he might impose are limited and crafted to respond to Trump's documented conduct. As that conduct grows more egregious - it will - Engoron will ratchet up the sanctions. He will increase them as high as he needs to.

Snowflake professor. I didn't see an attempt by her to close her door or ask students to move along, over a noisy hallway. That is, she made little or no attempt to work with or have a relationship with students, or model problem solving for them - beyond calling campus security.

I would say the professor needs a time out, a week, say, working the cafeteria line with the same students she called campus security on. She's the one who's supposed to be the mature adult in this room.

So let me get this straight. Jim Jordan wants to be Speaker, but he doesn’t nearly have the votes, so he’s going ahead anyway counting on his allies to bully and harass his opponents into submission by inundating them with MAGA extremist calls to their offices, with the help of Sean Hannity on Fox? If I were a holdout, this would make me dig in even further, but then again I don’t know what it’s like to be a Republican without a spine.

huntingdon,
@huntingdon@mstdn.social avatar

@georgetakei

Gym Jordan seems to be imitating his patron, Donald Trump. Ignore reality, act as if you already have what you want, scream at holdouts, and tell others to "Stop me if you can!" if they don't like it.

Jordan is vehemently anti-democratic. He's the last person who should be appointed Speaker of the House. I hope Ohio voters take note and finally end his public employment. He hasn't done much for them, and is about to do even less.

    Trump poisoning the DC jury pool in the case before Judge Chutkan is not only about that case. His aspirations are national. His persona and his legal woes are his campaign. The more he paints himself as the victim of an unjust system, the better for his campaign.

    I think he views his best legal defense as retaking the White House. Besides, does he not need only one juror in DC to believe him?

    It is simply not possible to evacuate over one million people in 24 hours from the zone of attack in Gaza. The answer to horrific atrocities by Hamas cannot be collective punishment upon an entire population, 50 percent of which are children.

    huntingdon, (edited )
    @huntingdon@mstdn.social avatar

    @georgetakei

    Yes, in the confines of the tiny Gaza Strip, third most densely populated territory on the planet, where are one million people to go? The other side of the street? They would remain fodder for Israeli carpet bombing.

    Slaughtering more civilians would not seem to be a solution to the slaughter of other civilians. It would perpetuate vendetta - already a cancer - and further delay political resolution between Israelis and Palestinians.
