Im loving this shared experience with all the people posting aurora photos.

One of the rare times when I feel connected to so many people at once - we are having a shared experience together as humans.

Its fucking lovely.

So for the last few years I've been following a system where I use WSL on my Windows machine as my daily driver prompt, but all the actual build tools are windows versions, so I'm like in the WSL bash shell using WSL git and WSL fileutils but when I want to run a program I run cargo.exe or or cmake.exe or python.exe or npm.bat or whatever so that whatever I build/run is a real Windows executable that can use USB and such. This system works extremely well, except when I need to do things

ike,
@ike@pkm.social avatar

@mcc Ive been using WSL as a way to "toe-dip" in to linux but now Ive about had it with Windows and thinking of just setting up my laptop to primarily boot in to Linux Mint but keep Windows 10 on it just in case.

I can only think of 1 program that doesnt have a linux version and I should be able to find a substitute or run it under wine anyway.

ike,

@janeadams are you getting any false positives from the "ai" filter?

I'm not sure if it is simply a "contains" filter or not - which would itself filter a post that contains the word 'contains' due to it containing 'ai' in the word.

I also use the other filter you set up (and other synonyms and adjacent topics).

    @skykiss l agree with your sentiment, though rest assured, planes arent going to fall out of the sky just because the plane loses GPS signal:

    Planes actually lose GPS signal somewhat regularly and many planes still dont have a GPS receiver. Planes have multiple navigational mechanisms and didnt even have GPS until the late 80s early 90s. It would take multiple simultaneous failures to lose all navigational ability - and even then in most cases, pilots can just... look out the window....

As Fass put it, 'Teenagers don’t seem very grown-up these days.' There’s not much reason to fear or exalt babysitters anymore—because our society no longer trusts teens to babysit much at all."

    I haven't examined the whole series of posts (Im coming into this from the middle) since Im multi tasking and I dont want to lose the thought...

    In addition to what you shared, the deterioration of neighborhood community creates trust issues. People feel anonymous / unseen, and therefore anti-social leading to anti-social behaviors that further deteriorate the neighborhood/community.

    Its a little dorky, but I wave to everyone I see in my neighborhood evey time.

    Anyone wanting to sign up to pkm.social will now need to submit a request to join, and then have that request manually approved by one of the moderators (that's Andy, me, or @leah). This is purely to keep pkm.social spam-free-- all real people are still welcome!

    Social media often results in lawsuits.

    That is to say, when it comes to social media, people can be very "sue happy". They like to sue, often for irrational reasons, and it can be financially draining.

    If you plan on operating a Fediverse server with open registrations, I urge you to consult with a lawyer. And to limit your personal liability, you might want to operate it through the aegis of a corporate entity.

    ike,
    @ike@pkm.social avatar

    @atomicpoet Im not 100% sure operating it as a corporate entity provides a significant legal shield in the US. Ive looked into the idea for a fractional airplane partnership and was told that the veil of liability is easily pierced.

    Not sure how UK law works but @neil probably has some additional insight.

    I’ve been building my new website in , and it’s the first time a static site generator has really clicked for me. I’ve been using different ones forever and they were always confounding in some way.

    One of the nice things about moving from another SSG is how your archives are just.. files.

    After a few days of tinkering, I think I’m happy with the structure, and will next spend some time figuring out design and accessibility elements.

    https://staging.popagandhi.com/

    ike,
    @ike@pkm.social avatar

    @skinnylatte I like where this is going, and I'm happy to see that nice little RSS icon in the upper right! Nice layout and color palette!

    For the backlog... If I may offer some admittedly unsolicited feedback based on my experience with my own static site regarding accessibility.... I highly recommend testing mobile dimensions and putting media max-width css elements in for responsive layout breakpoints at ~400px and ~1024px so that your content is consumable without scrolling.

    ike,
    @ike@pkm.social avatar

    @skinnylatte OH, you know what? I think I am mistaken. I'm sorry.

    I think your CSS already adjusts for mobile, but the images dont resize, which is what is causing the horizontal scroll bar to appear.

    I apologize for my preemptive suggestion.

    Has anyone found an elegant way to use activity pub / mastodon / fediverse for supporting comments on a static website / blog?

    I see wordpress has a plugin, and I found another solution that required some manual plugging in of a post id per blog post.

    Any other solutions folks are aware of?

    ike,
    @ike@pkm.social avatar

    @nicole See this blog post1. I don't like the idea of having to manually post on Mastodon and then feed the id back in to my blog. Additionally, I would prefer if visitors could just auth w/ their fediverse account on my site and comment so that they don't have to leave my website.

    Obsidian's annual Gems of the Year winners for 2023 have been announced, and the Best Tool is something called Quartz that I've been meaning to try for a full year now. Well, I decided it was about time to learn it and... it's pretty amazing. It's a free, open-source static site generator that happens to be really good at turning notes into a public site that is more easily shared. https://youtu.be/6s6DT1yN4dw

    In case you prefer text, here's the write up: https://notes.nicolevanderhoeven.com/How+to+publish+Obsidian+notes+with+Quartz+on+GitHub+Pages

    ike,
    @ike@pkm.social avatar

    @nicole Looking at your write-up now! I tried Quartz first around a year ago but ended up using a similar plug-in called Digital Garden (https://dg-docs.ole.dev/ ). I don't remember why specifically.

    I did end up hacking a lot of CSS and the template scripts ("nunjucks") to get my site arranged how I want though, as I wanted it to be an engine for my entire personal website and not just a public digital garden.

    I really think that @jarango 's book on note-taking, Duly Noted, is THE best book on note-taking on the market right now. I'm featured in it and reviewed it, but I don't get anything for promoting it. This is not an affiliate link. I just think it's good.

    If you do decide to get it, here's a discount for you all! For the next two days, you can buy Jorge's book here: https://rosenfeldmedia.com/books/duly-noted-extend-your-mind-through-connected-notes/ and enter the code NVDH for a 15% discount. This is until January 26th, 2024 (Friday)!

    @ike@pkm.social avatar

    @nicole @jarango Hey Nicole - thats great to hear. I'm not doubting your authenticity, but I would be interested in hearing why you believe its the best note-taking book.

    I've sucked at note taking my whole life. Obsidian works for me because it aids with recall and easier than notebooks to build habits around. So a book that helps in making note taking more useful/effective is of interest to me!
