Anyone got a good recommendation for a standing desk VESA mount, that's not a $250+ Ergotron LX Tall? The Amazon Basics Ergotron white label that I was planning to use is pretty great but needs to go up 6-9" more for proper positioning.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul unfortunately not, but as a data point I’ve had both an Ergotron and a cheaper model and out of those two I only regret the cheaper one.

My dilemma is that while I like making systemic games, I most enjoy playing mystery games, and that’s a pretty big chasm to cross. Maybe that’s why I’ve never released a game…

Would it be neat to have a keyboard that’s application aware? That is, get reports from the system about the active program and then change to a suitable layout if configured for it?

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@voided Streamdeck is essentially this, with a mini screen per key showing what it actually does in that context

Playing Stray and suddenly wondering: do cats even recognize/understand arrows?

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@fasterthanlime probably not as they don’t understand pointing with a finger either. Dogs are the only animals, or at least among the few animals capable of understanding that AFAIK.

I dislike polls, so I'm just going to ask:

  • Do you use the 'prev' and 'next' link at the bottom of blog posts?

I don't, hence why I removed them from my site. Interested in knowing how other people navigate blogs.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@m2m I only use them if there’s no better way to navigate, like a timeline / archive.

steamgirl, to gamedev

Can any or out there recommend a .csv editor that isn't Excel (as Excel LOVES to reformat all the things) but is still in rows and columns?

Normally I'd use Notepad++ but I can't deal with how it displays .csv I get sensory overload.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@steamgirl we used LibreOffice at my previous job for CSV editing. Not perfect but better than anything we could find.

jocrossick, to random

I'm starting to think that agile is an unhelpful distraction. The only times "agile" had succeeded it's been common cause, not cause-and-effect... There's nothing inherently positive or negative in the philosophy, but it does (traditionally) go hand in hand with things like software crafting which ARE helpful.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@jocrossick lukewarm take: is a term coined by corporations to try to shoehorn useful development practices into their bureaucratic reality. The two are inherently incompatible so this leads to ruin. I’ve been in meetings where I urged that we need to change our plans now since we set on the wrong path, and the response was essentially “we will consider this for the next sprint.” Incidentally “sprints” were also month-long. It was a disaster.

darshan, to rust

What books 📚 or courses would you suggest for learning Rust? I'm looking for something made for people that are already experienced in coding

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@livingcoder @darshan I’m almost finished with this and I can definitely vouch for it. For context I have roughly a year and a half of experience with Rust.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@darshan Rust for Rustaceans. I would say it’s best if you have at least a year or so of experience with Rust already

I'm so confused about the market for professional AV editors who want to work on an iPad. If you need to do this stuff on the go why not just get a MBA or the MBP 14”?

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul some artists at my previous job loved the big iPad Pro for the Pencil integration. Like a portable Wacom.

This was a first, but probably not the last. Someone brought up ChatGPT's answer as validation for their position in a technical argument as if it was another expert giving an opinion.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@gbevin yep I’ve also seen genuine astonishment when someone learned ChatGPT is hallucinating answers instead of looking them up in a reliable way. This is going to get worse before it gets better.

RL_Dane, to rust

Why is it that people's reaction to #Rust is either cult-level positive or Ted Cruz-level disgust?

I don't think I've heard more than a single person basically say, "Yeah, Rust is ok, but I like X better because Y." ;)

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@RL_Dane I like Rust and X, I just don’t feel like being loud about it

Sektori (week 95): Still slow going, still working on upgrades. Not much has changed, but everything has changed. Also, systems design is hard! Also, I'm still going to test one new system. Also, this game is never going to be finished, right? Also, I'm tired. Also, here's a random gif.

@gimblll reminds me a lot of Geometry Wars, and that’s high compliment!

flashmasterdash, to rust

Oh! Rust iterators have zero overhead compared to regular loops and indexed access. This is amazing!

Coming from managed languages like Java, C#, and (to some degree, Kotlin) this is a real advantage and helps to make code clean and performant without tradeoffs.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@flashmasterdash many times they’re faster than index-based loops as they allow the compiler to make assumptions that indexing doesn’t.

My ATH-M50XBT just had one of the buttons break after three years of use and my attempt was a failure. Any suggestions for around-ear headphones which I might hope to serve me for a long time? I hate having to buy new electronics when old gear breaks.

    @emilygorcenski @hazelweakly I agree that they suck for most purposes, especially filtering, but following hashtags is such a powerful feature I can’t think of how to replicate otherwise. You want post categories to be manual, not hallucinated by AI, and categories are basically tags… or you could say hashtags.

    ilmai,
    @ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

    @hazelweakly @emilygorcenski yep agreed with the critique for sure. Just pointing out a use case I can’t see a good alternative to.

    I noticed yesterday that I have "accidentally" collected an album's worth of material, and more, during the past couple of years of COVID isolation and its aftermath, so I decide to collect the best of those as a new album. Really happy with this one, personally I feel like this might be my strongest and most coherent album to date. Hope you enjoy. https://viiri.bandcamp.com/album/synth-works-iv

    drmikachu, to gamedev

    Today is my first day off in SO LONG! When you work for yourself, it's hard to step away. Do you ever feel like if you don't get it done, it won't happen? I'm much better at telling the rest of the team to relax than I am at being kind to myself!

    But it was well earned. We just finished our first gameplay trailer for THE SPIRIT LIFT and will be sharing screenshots and gifs publicly soon!

    What about you all? Do you have trouble giving yourself a break from your indie work?

    ilmai,
    @ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

    @drmikachu totally. I decided to take a break from working on my project last night and it made me question if it would ever get finished and other silly ideas like that.
