Hot take: I don't think I've ever seen an application UI made with Dear ImGui that feels good.

Feel free to prove me wrong!

ilmai,

@SonnyBonds it’s not really even meant for applications, is it? At least originally it was meant for in-game debug UIs.

friends, I'm looking for advice. Partly to . Partly because my NAS is old.

I'm looking to store normal stuff (images, etc.), but also some fairly substantial raw files, and private files from my music business.

I'm currently using g drive for pics, day-to-day files, and using a dual-drive for backup.

Was thinking of everything in the cloud (cheaper up front), but will prob buy similar solutions from two different companies for redundancy.

Was also thinking just spinning up a but needs to be easy for my non-techie wife to access her photos.

Thoughts?

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@askDNA I’m using a combination of Sync (for storage) and Backblaze (for backup). This combo has worked great for a handful of years now.

Thinking more about the thing and, honestly I don't think I want to win. What it would have to be to "win" would sort of undercut the core values. Like sure let's get quote posts and other stuff that'll help more of a diverse culture but, that wouldn't be enough to "win".

Let's stop short of winning. Would love this to just be a strong #2 or #3. The Xbox of social networks. That's plenty. I really want a reliable bedrock kinda community place, for when BlueSky dies exactly the same way Twitter did in 5-10 years.

(also, it's fine if this place always skews a bit nerdy cus of the mildest of technical sign-up hurdles? It can doubtless be smoothed, but it just, makes it a nice niche for nerds, of which I am one, yay? The era of everything-networks is ending, smaller niches are good)

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@glassbottommeg this is exactly what I’ve been thinking every time someone says Mastodon has “failed” since it doesn’t have 100M+ users. It hasn’t failed, it’s actually pleasant to be around as opposed to all other social media sites I have experience with.

Looking into home automation in general and home assistant specifically. Looks pretty neat, but I have so far approximately zero ideas for things it could do that would improve anything.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@SonnyBonds so far the only two things I’ve found genuinely useful: having the ability to switch lights on and off from the bed without installing a new light switch, and turning on the video projector without keeping the remote around. That’s basically it…

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@SonnyBonds yeah most things seem to only be relevant if you’re willing to go all in at serious expense. Like it would be useful to have a main water valve connected to a leak sensor, or central control of all lighting in an around the house. But as I’ve had smart bulbs fail, I’ve replaced many of them with regular bulbs as they don’t feel like they’re worth the price of replacement…

How do you decide when your is ready for beta testing? 🤔💻

ilmai,

@LeoSandbox depends on what you’re looking for in a beta test. Feedback? As early as possible. Finding bugs? After it’s feature complete.

There's a trick I've been using when a shiny new project idea (e.g. a game) sticks in my head and I can't get rid of it: immediately start writing a thorough design document & development plan for it. This achieves several goals:

  1. You won't fear that you'll forget the cool stuff you've come up with, since it's now written down
ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@lisyarus I’m doing this with everything, not just projects. Writing things down as soon as I think about them lets my brain let go of them and focus on other stuff, and I’m less likely to forget things.

sinbad, to random
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Thought for the day: when working at a for-profit business, you are always paid less than the business thinks your work is worth to the bottom line. That’s just the nature of business - no-one tries to break even or lose money.

Employment and work for hire is a trade off - you agree to receive less than the full value of your work, in return for a more predictable income stream. That can be a good trade, but you should be aware that you’re making it.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@sinbad this is true, but also ideally companies allow their employees to work on projects that they couldn’t work on individually. This, also ideally, results in more income than the employees could make on their own. Whether this trickles down to the individual employees or not is sadly not a given. I’ve worked at both kinds of companies.

Is there a better way than manually muting people to filter out posts in languages I don’t read? I have set language filters in settings but maybe the posts don’t have the correct language metadata so they get shown anyway? I’m using @ivory if that matters.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@cihi1970 @ivory ah yeah that’s probably the problem, it happens when following hashtags. Maybe that can be fixed at some point…

Work/life balance is not applicable to creative work imo... but it's dangerous to say that because people will yell at you. Let' talk about this. Exploitation is bad. DO NOT let a corporation abuse you or destroy your time/life. However, don't police how creative people spend their time. We have little control over the creative flow... some days we need to write for 12 hours... or code all night. So, we need to look at things differently. Work/life balance doesn't mean much to someone who is passionate about a project... their work is their life. Those who are driven are somewhat different. We need to encourage breaks, exercise, and regular meals. We need more specifics... and we need to understand that it's OK to work from 3pm to 3am if you want to. This doesn't really apply to corporate work... fuck them. Never do any overtime for that stuff.

I feel like I need to write 5 pages on this so I don't get yelled at, but have a look at this first: This video on work/life balance nails it... it's from Tim Cain (creator of Fallout and key figure behind Bloodlines, Arcanum, etc.)

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@ward I would kinda disagree anecdotally. I have a creative job that I love, but I’ve been very happy limiting myself to work between 8-16. I’ve been more productive and less stressed having made that decision. And I have the kids to thank for “forcing” that decision on me.

Is it just me or Plugin Alliance is starting to look like Waves? I keep getting daily emails pressuring me to check out their $29.99 deals that's ONLY FOR TODAY, when the day after there's another one.

I love many of their plugs, as well as several brands that are part of the Alliance, however this doesn't bode well, especially if coupled with their recent buyout from Native Instruments.

Where do people buy their audio plugins these days?

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@m2m I tend to use more indie devs. Tokyo Dawn is excellent, as is Valhalla. I also like Klanghelm, TB Pro Audio and a lot of smaller ones who only do one or two plugins.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@m2m yeah I’ve used Acon Acoustica for a year or two now when I got tired of RX being so slow and heavy on resources. Their DSP isn’t as advanced but I haven’t looked back. Acoustica starts in a second or two.

Off to a slow start today. I want to send the game to a few friends (because I enjoy crying) and I needed to get to zero bugs.

ilmai,
@ilmai@hachyderm.io avatar

@gingerspeckle @grumpygamer that does happen for a long time yeah. You know when a project is starting to approach the finish line when the TODO list starts shrinking instead of growing. Of course it takes a bit of self-discipline to start rejecting items when they would lead to feature creep instead of improving the core game.

@DominikDammer yeah I played a single (1) game of DOTA back when and got such hostile comments for not knowing how to play that I immediately bounced off. I never got to know if I would have liked the game.

The worst part is, they probably enjoy destroying other players.
