indigoparadox

@indigoparadox@mastodon.social

I'm interested in things (computers, mostly. Old computers, handheld computers, personal computers, minicomputers, etc). Sometimes I also like manga, Pokemon, Vocaloid, or other things.

I like programming as a hobby. Mainly in C and Python but I try to branch out sometimes if appropriate. I also like sensors and automation. Check my media tab for more!

I am 30 or 40 years old. 🦝

If this factory ever produces a shell that can actually be fired, I'll be very unhappy.

How do the genders of nouns in gendered languages get decided? Did somebody like look at a chair and decide a chair was female

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@ramsey @ian We use "gender" for plugs, too. The pointy bit is usually the male one. Has anyone tried to analyze correlation of the gender of words to kiki/bouba status?

Me, searching for USB products on Amazon: Amazon, what are these?

Amazon: What?

Me, pointing at product pages: These things you're selling, what are they?

Amazon: They're products.

Me: Yes, but what are they? What do they do?

Amazon, looking at me with a mixture of frustration and pity: They're good products.

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I was looking through these earlier... I wanted something that would let my Raspberry Pi 4 act like a USB guest (which it can only do on the USB-C port... which is also the power port) while being powered.

Unfortunately, these splitters all only seem to be for acting as a host on the USB-C port while also being powered? Useful if you have a device with only a USB C port, I guess.

Very annoying, otherwise!

And "OTG" is just SEO since folks understand it as "the little guy is the host!"

Here's some interesting trivia: it was getting a little bit too much to transport a top hat from my East Coast to West Coast locations so I actually have a East Coast top hat collection and a West Coast one.

indigoparadox,

@mrcompletely @textfiles Why would a hat need to be set to the local timezone?

I thought they could auto-set the time off the cellphone towers?

I took some pseudo-selfies with my Sony Mavica FD5 from 1997, which saves jpegs on a floppy disk. Amazingly, this is the high quality mode!

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I love looking at my digital camera photos from the late 90s (my grandpa had a Canon FinePix, I think? It uploaded via RS-232), I try to remember if everything was really just blurrier back then.

Are they pseudo selfies because you're not using a selfie stick? Sparkling autoimages?

@foone Oh I found it... Olympus D-200L. 😌

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@foone So it won't turn on... Tried new batteries and all... The screen can turn on if the lenscap is open but it's just blue... I took it apart a little... caps look good... No idea.

But the next step up is only $25 on ebay! It says it's working and it still seems to use the serial port (most important part), so let's waste some money! 😌

It's easy to jump to conspiracy theories, but I think a lot of people don't understand the mental stress of being a litigant - especially the central witness. It looks like Barnett was subject to multiple days of deposition questioning, which is very stressful.

I think it is a disservice to mental health to assume Barnett's passing must be nefarious.

@JoeStewart @rcpierce @law I think calling it a conspiracy theory and blaming "mental health" is making a distinction without a difference... Putting someone in a stressful situation to get them out of the picture is a go-to for corporate America.

I'm calling it now: he won't select a VP. He's too paranoid, self-centered, and stubborn to imagine "what would we do if you couldn't be president" just as he can't admit that he lost, he can't admit that it might not be him.

And the republicans will put up with it too.

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird I'm usually the one who comes up with ultra-cynical contrarian takes, but I haven't considered this. I like it. It's not impossible, and if I've learned one thing about this guy, it's "always bet on vanity."

indigoparadox, to random
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

The real time to get retro hardware, if you get to pick, is the early 2000s when everyone's throwing out the good stuff they piled up in storage during the 90s so they can renovate or w/e. All the Pentiums, 3c509b NICs, floppy drives, and ribbon cables you can eat. Maybe the odd 68k Mac. Take 'em by the boxload, free or $1 at a surplus sale.

Now most of them have been destroyed, one way or another, and an AUI transceiver is $50 on ebay.

I had a buncha those around here, gosh darnit! digging

I dislike Tomb Raider games. I will eventually buy the remastered trilogy just so I can confirm that after all these years I still dislike them. 😅

I last played them half of my life ago. My memories of them seem to be fairly clear, but I'm a different person now. Who knows? Maybe I'll discover something appealing about them. Could happen. 🤷‍♂️

Has this ever happened to you? As in you've grown to enjoy a game years after you originally disliked it? 🤔

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@dosnostalgic I made it, like, halfway through the first one when it was still new... I'm more of a sim- or creative-game player and games back then didn't have much character customization in general outside of the hard-core RPGs, so it wasn't really my thing for the gameplay... but the graphics were super-neat! Combined with the mostly-absent music, I think? the whole thing had an ethereal vibe which was... an experience.

Wish I could've customized the mansion. 😩

indigoparadox,

indigoparadox,

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@promovicz I think it's been around 10-15 years since I finished them all, so I barely remember anything aside from the spinny gates and the P90s. But yes, the dialing procedures were top-notch. Maybe it's partly that, too. Startup procedures do get me pumped. This is one of my favorite videos on YouTube if you got by watch count: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae20L78imO4 😌
