Kilauea is rumbling…
“Rates of seismicity & deformation increased ... it is not possible to say with certainty if this activity will lead to an eruption, the activity may remain below ground. However, an eruption in Kīlauea’s summit region is one potential outcome.”

Interesting summary of the ongoing saga of the moving mud pot in Niland, near the Salton Sea in Southern California. I had just started a geophysics project in that area when I left my faculty position, it would have been fun to try and figure this out!

Some more updates on the New Jersey earthquake: the regional moment tensor indicates a M4.8 and a mix of strike slip and reverse faulting at a depth of 7km. No aftershocks have been reported yet, which is a bit surprising for an event of this size.

M5.7 deep (35-40 km) near Pahala, . Two interesting hypotheses as to the origin of these events: flexure of the lithosphere due to weight of the overlying or migrating into the Pāhala area & stalling at depth, pressurizing the region

Unfortunately, it appears that this will have much more of an impact on the local population than the previous one, with the crossing the protective berm that was built earlier.
