TFW you find the exact GitHub project you've been looking for, but it's just recently been archived without any note to explain why it was :/

jawnsy,
@jawnsy@mastodon.social avatar

@anderseknert So sad when that happens. I've come across that when I've been like "oh, I finally might have a use for that random project that I came across awhile ago" only to find that it's been archived without explanation

For someone who lives in San Francisco who doesn’t know how to drive a car, I’ve certainly eaten my way through large chunks of the Bay Area

@skinnylatte They should have tour buses that just take you from restaurant to restaurant, IMO lol

Got on the ferry heading downtown this evening and to the restaurant where I took Ina on our first date. Eight years and two kids later, I’m at a better place than I ever could have hoped for back then.

@Viss @ai6yr now I'm waiting for Shodan or Censys or a different search engine to do Bluetooth scans, so we can see Dan give a talk about these devices 😝

Long and absolutely terrifying day, but Harry’s surgery went well, and despite having both of his tonsils and the andenoid removed, he just managed to have some pancakes for dinner. I feel like I could need a double scotch myself, but it’ll have to wait until we get back home later in the week.

@anderseknert He looks to be in good spirits, all things considered. Glad to hear that the surgery went well! Seems like a super stressful situation for a parent

Insightful take about corporate contributions to open source, and whether IP is valuable:

"I’m sorry to be the one to have to break it to you, but most of the intellectual property that your company creates isn’t especially important and it’s certainly not business critical."

"What qualifies as critical intellectual property naturally varies by company and business, but you’ll probably know it when you see it."

"The enshittification of the services we once loved and still rely on represents a series of victories for the forces of evil over the forces of good – a victory for the people who want to use the internet to trap us, over the people who want to use the internet to set us free.

As it got harder for users to leave online services, it got easier to abuse users."

Next.js static export not supporting next/image is wild.

“Since Next.js supports this static export, it can be deployed and hosted on any web server that can serve HTML/CSS/JS static assets.”

But not images!!

https://nextjs.org/docs/pages/building-your-application/deploying/static-exports#unsupported-features

This is a prime example of customers losing from an unhealthy relationship between framework and hosting provider.

jawnsy,
@jawnsy@mastodon.social avatar

@zachleat I think that's a common problem with vendor-driven open source projects. I sympathize with them because they've created a bunch of value and, understandably, they want to capture it.

What would you recommend as an alternative?

👉For better or worse, understanding JARs is an unavoidable first step to using Flink if you're running it yourself.

👇 That's why I wrote about it a lot 😁

jawnsy,

@va2lam @ricci 35mm is great for portraits IMO, pretty versatile focal length since it's close to the nifty fifty (52mm equiv at 1.5x crop factor)

If I'm not planning anything specific then my Sigma 30mm is what I use as an all rounder lens

    As engineers, it's easy for us to measure inputs (how much time we're spending) and outputs (lines of code written or features produced), but what really matters are the business outcomes (customers acquired and retained, revenue growth metrics, profitability), which are less directly related.

    It's always useful for us to step back and ask ourselves: what's the point?

    If you don’t live somewhere with great ramen, this is an excellent at home option. It arrives frozen. Sun Noodles makes ramen for most of the top ramen restaurants in the U.S.

    Soup and noodles are as good as a good ramen restaurant

    Even if you live somewhere with good ramen, it’s an economical option
