Went to lunch with my bosses to a restaurant nearby the office. Scanned the QR code to see the menu (ugh). Noticed that the chef is apparently having a good time naming his menu items.

@JimRockford I think they do also have printed menus but you gotta ask for those.

Never have heard of this Zeebo console from Brazil/Mexico before but looks like it was just emulated and apparently has an incredible version of Double Dragon that I absolutely need to check out sometime.

XDefiant launches today. Didn't work on it aside from giving a bit of advice for a particular packaging issue they were running into. Still, there's always a fun energy in the air around the studio when a launch is happening, even if it's the launch of something we didn't work on locally.

It's strange to me how many people think that we wouldn't be cheering on other companies and other studios when they launch new games out there. The honest truth is that if you've been in the gamedev industry for any amount of time, you have friends just about everywhere and we all just want to support each other.

A rising tide raises all boats, you know? And with all the layoffs happening industry-wide, seeing good news feels all the better.

I've been laid off and need a new job. Maybe game journalism, maybe something else in games, maybe not games at all. Entertaining all possibilities at this point, so please reach out if you think I might be a good fit for you.

@BrendanSinclair Sorry to hear that, hoping that you land on your feet quickly.

Some incredible stuff from various fan communities out there these days. Mario Builder 64 is essentially a Mario Maker type game for Super Mario 64 that even allows you to download levels other people have made.

So many really talented folks out there, I hope it doesn't die an early cease-and-desist death from Big N.

Check out the release trailer here:

@arcadetoken Yep, so many bust their nut on early launch trailers and "coming soon!" type stuff and never get to be out there in the wild.

I finally did it. I used an LLM. A couple of months ago, MS added its Copilot to Windows. I turned it off. But the latest update shoved it back in my face and tried to get me to let it use my data. So I asked it a question: How do I get rid of Copilot? It suggested I uninstall it like any other program, but MS removed that option. But Copilot went on to tell me the exact registry key to change to block it from loading, and now it's gone.

@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@WearsHats Some of the Windows debloat apps out there can also do that for you (along with a lot of other Windows annoyances).

punkscience_ns, to Steamdeck
@punkscience_ns@me.dm avatar

Is there a alternative? I seem to recall someone mentioning one to me like it was a less expensive no-brainer because it would also run some Windows software.

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@punkscience_ns The main Steam Deck alternative out there is the ROG Ally. You can find used ones out there for pretty cheap right now, especially since they just announced a successor a few days ago, but generally speaking, not cheaper than a Steam Deck. It's essentially a Windows laptop in a different form factor. ASUS has its flaws (as does the Ally itself) but it's put a lot of support into the Ally, far better than the other competitors out there so far.

There's also the Lenovo Legion Go, the MSI Claw and a few other Chinese Windows machines, but all are either nowhere near as supported, nowhere near as cheap or just plain hard to get without signing up for an Indiegogo and waiting months.

As far as running some Windows software is concerned, most of these Windows based machines can be used as a full on desktop replacement when docked with keyboard and mouse if you wanted to do that (and I have done so for 6 months or so).

Hope this helps. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away.

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@natejung @punkscience_ns Tradeoffs though, you do have to wait for Proton to get fixed when it busts some games when it updates too.

I guess someone saw my face on their coworker's screen just as we're about to start a closing committee Teams meeting for our game as I suddenly heard a loud "Jay? Fuck YEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!" in the background of someone from the Quebec studio making us all laugh.

Love you too. ❤️

I've created a Debug Console control (ala Quake) for which works well & decided to try using it as physical in-game consoles. Simple enough to hook up using SubViewport->CavansLayer->DebugConsole to render it to a texture. However it's not receiving input events to any of the Input/UnhandledInput/UnhandledKeyInput/GuiInput/etc. methods. I've hacked around it by piping input from the character controller. Is this an issue with SubViewports in general or have I messed something up?

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@Devilbox Quake style debug consoles/terminals need to be standard. So useful.

The big reveal for one of the games I've been working on for a little while is happening in about 40 minutes. Excited to see it and what the reaction is going to be. (Yeah, I haven't seen the trailer internally myself yet.) You can find that happening over here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vovkzbtYBC8

@andreagrandi I'm a release specialist for all games using the Anvil Pipeline engine, I assist in getting the productions through their stage gates and milestones. It means that I sit with the productions daily as they decide what to cut, what to keep and help them with their needs on the engine side of things.

jay, to Kubernetes
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

Decided to sit down and try to learn despite the fact that I don't have any real need for it on my little home server. Still, it's been interesting and - I won't lie - a bit frustrating at times. It's very much like using a chainsaw to butter my bread for my use case, but I had a nice feeling of satisfaction when I succeeded in getting set up through it. I've had some odd issues with Docker failing to launch certain containers through containerd that I have not been able to figure out, however.

I was putting thought into maybe redoing my server setup with kubernetes but I sincerely worry that I'll run into this same containerd issue with some of my other apps.

Today started with a text from my son travelling in Japan: “Help, stuck, credit card blocked a again.” Unable to call the bank from where he was, and since the card was on our family account, I was able to call. Bottom line: RBC gave super horrible customer service. Second call for unrelated task with Desjardin insurnace… made my day, best customer service ever... as usual.

RBC is also invests heavily in Fossil Fuels, this clinched the decision to fully leave RBC.

jay,
@jay@toot.zerojay.com avatar

@outofcontrol Did they block the credit card because of security concerns seeing the transactions coming from a different country? If so, you should call them ahead of your trip so that they are aware and don't block the transactions.

jay,

A look at a recompilation tool for N64 games to allow native PC ports without the crazy amount of manual work needed to decompile them first. Very impressive stuff here. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is the first release to get the recompilation treatment with even a native Linux port that works on the Steam Deck.
