Morning Mastodonians!

So no hockey for me this morning. I pushed it a little too hard and now my left knee is swollen and sore. I guess a day of skiing, followed by two straight mornings of hockey are a bit too much for these ancient joints. Generally not a knee problem guy, but ever since I twisted it hiking in the Fells, it's more sensitive to overuse. Toss in a headache-filled Sunday and my weekend was kind of the pits. And yesterday was, well, a Monday.

promises to be another grinder, although again a nice day, weather-wise. While my balky knee doesn't allow long-ranging hikes through the Fells, I hope to take the dogs out for a neighborhood stroll anyway. Despite the promised rain tomorrow, I really should take the to the car wash. Birds have been abusing it lately. I also need to buy some beans. My monthly delivery of 5 lbs just doesn't quite make it the entire month, which is annoying. And then C & I will get back to .

Spun up a new SVN server. Git/LFS just doesn't cut it with large art files multiple devs can be working on. SVN has so much historical cruft.

@grumpygamer have you checked out ? It's used by lots of game companies.

That was quite the movie watching birthday! First up was Casablanca in the movie theater with my wife and daughter. Thanks to the Brattle for bringing my all time favorite movie to the big screen once again. Just an amazing experience. Then @adrienne and I watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. We watched Raiders a few years ago, which is another of my all time favorites. I debated about watching Temple, because I never liked it, but figured we had to and it was okay. @movies

Morning Mastodonians!

Not a bad weekend. The weather was pretty amazing (as it is today), including hitting 60F / 15.5C. The dogs & I went for a nice long walk in the Fells yesterday, for the first time in a while. We met a couple of friends for dinner on Saturday. They're about our age and have 2 daughters about the same ages as ours, so there's plenty to talk and laugh about. The place had an excellent beer list and while my steak dip wasn't all I hoped for, everyone else enjoyed their meal.

Just unfollowed someone for boosting a post that called Trump insane and psychotic. As a certified madwoman who is sometimes psychotic, I find it tedious and insulting when plain old fascism is attributed to mental illness. Just don’t

@flexghost my musical tastes are so far off "mainstream" I don't know where to start. But I've seen The Courtneys in concert and their Courtneys 2 album remains a personal favorite, and no one has ever heard of them. Great indie guitar rock, with a drummer who writes the songs and sings! Check out Minnesota:

Morning Mastodonians!

Played well again at hockey this morning. I wish I could bottle up my confidence on mornings like this to use later! I felt so good, moving well, anticipating the play, feeling good out there. So exhilarating! I gave up 2 goals, both on breakaways to the best players, but only after stoning them several times. Sometimes, you have to tip your cap. But otherwise, it was flawless and we won a good, tight game, 5-2. Maybe I'll reward myself and go check out some new pads!

I had my yearly "exam" this morning. It was just a video checkup, which I think is good news because that means there's nothing obviously wrong! I am mostly clear from my cold and conjunctivitis, with just a lingering cough. Blood work came through with everything normal, including my PSA levels. I had previously been against the test because nearly every man will have some kind of prostate problem. But my doctor convinced me otherwise and so far, the numbers are good. TMI, maybe?

Hoping for a quiet day and a quiet weeken. I suppose we'll put on the Super Bowl. I'm sure my girls, both Swifties, will insist on it. I have some errands to run that I have been putting off. And maybe, like I said, I'll swing by the goalie store and check out some new equipment. And then queue up a movie. I should set aside a chunk of time for Killing Moon. I've watched 3 of the movies so far and 2 more (Moon and Maestro) are available to me "free".

what problems do you run into with git's staging area? right now I'm feeling like the staging area is one of the least confusing parts of git (merging, branches, and remotes seem to cause people a lot more problems) but I'm very open to writing about it if there are problems

jda,
@jda@social.sdf.org avatar

@b0rk I just don't understand the purpose of the staging area. The number of times I stage and don't commit is infinitesimal and it all adds an unnecessary complication for me. I got along for 20 years in Perforce without a staging area and never missed it.

Okay, picking up from my video game post yesterday, I'm curious:

When you play video games, rpgs, ect, where you get to choose your character, do you tend to choose a character of the same sex, the opposite sex, non-binary, anthropomorphic, or a mysterious 4th option?

If you want to share screenshots of character builds I would enjoy that!

jda,
@jda@social.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr I usually pick a female character and name her Rhiadri, a combo of my daughters' names, in honor of their strong independent streaks

Hard to believe, but despite the efforts of both Jason Statham and Aubrey Plaza, and the directorial abilities of Guy Ritchie, I could not make it thru Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. Too forced and too much computer mumbo jumbo. Maybe I was just too tired and sick for it, but it sucked. 1.5 out of 5 stars. @movies

Past Lives last 20 minutes almost made up for the previous 90 minutes of inert storytelling. I think you could have made a great short movie without spelling out their previous 2 excruciating encounters. 3.5 out of 5 stars. @movies

Morning Mastodonians!

Hockey is a funny game. Before the puck drop, my D said to me "You're going to see a lot of shots.". And it did look like the other team had 3, maybe 4, of the best players on the ice. But instead, we crushed them, 7-1, and the lone goal I gave up was a bouncer from the second line I should have had. We worked hard, but still, I would have never guessed. I wasn't even stressed too often. Funny how that works out sometimes.

jda,
@jda@social.sdf.org avatar

But even behind my mask, the guys were commenting on how red my eyes are. They are scary red. Maybe conjunctivitis, maybe just a reaction to my long-lasting head cold, maybe both but they are ugly right now. Not very itchy but the eyelids were stuck closed this morning. Odd. I've never had this before. Still have a hacky cough and stuffed-up nose. I wish I could shake this. Maybe if I could get more sleep it would help!

jda,
@jda@social.sdf.org avatar

So I am hoping for a quiet day . Work for a bit, then reward myself with an ice-cold gin & tonic this evening - ! Go to bed early and read. I've been trying to close out some of my Currently Reading list and not doing a bad job of it. I'm back to reading Dickens' Pickwick Papers. Pretty amusing. I would like to read more classics. It's been a while. Found "Dark Earth" by Stott to be pretty boring. Maybe the most boring I've ever finished! @bookstodon @books

jda,
@jda@social.sdf.org avatar

@nnscott @bookstodon @books oh, that sounds interesting! I read Claire Tomalin's wonderful biography of him but I've never really read any of his books.
