Great review of The Beekeeper, the latest crazy Statham movie, by @auzzy . I haven't seen it yet but I am anxiously awaiting it to hit streaming. Money quote:

Instead, they just insert Statham into a world made of dudes waiting to be punched, and everything around him is just boring window dressing.

Morning Mastodonians!

So @adrienne and I watched our first of the 2024 Oscar-nominated movies, The Holdovers and we enjoyed it. A raved about it, and while my more cynical heart wasn't quite as warmed, it was a pretty good movie. Nothing surprising about it, which was unexpected in itself because it is an Alexander Payne movie. But the location filming and the very 70-ishness (is that a word? Grammarly doesn't think so!) were well done and the acting was great. @movies

I love the way that cats would rather sit on anything other than a surface. Miss Cinnamon will sit on any notebook, bag, A4 envelope, cardigan, hat etc that an unwary person leaves out. She’s just gone outside to where Tom put the patio chairs against the wall to stop them blowing away in the recent storms. Instead of sitting on the seat of the empty chair, she’s made herself very small to crouch on the brick that’s weighting the end one down

Morning Mastodonians!

Yesterday didn't work out as planned. As the saying goes, no plan survives contact with the enemy. We did go grocery shopping but by adding in a trip to Costco crazy land, we didn't get home until much later than planned. And the honey-do list had a couple of Very Important Projects that required a trip to the hardware store. But both the coat rack & folding seat were repaired, so everyone was happy. The frigid temperatures didn't keep us from martinis by the firebowl!

Morning Mastodonians!

We had a fun night last night. First up was a couple 4 player games of High Society, my favorite filler from Knizia. Then I finally got the bar classic Skull & Roses to the table. And we wrapped up with a crazy 6 player game of Survive!: Escape from Atlantis. As usual, I won none of them although I was surprisingly close to the lead in Survive (won by @adrienne, closely followed by her sister - they're stone-cold killers in that game). @boardgames

    I've had a pretty good week of . Tuesdays are with C and, after 4 hours, we almost finished a 2 room dungeon. Not sure we'll even win! And then last night, 4 Guys Coop did finish Ch 4 of 4, Gates of Hell, after 2 tries, even with 10 lives. So far it's fun but it's missing the crazy chaos of the wide-open levels of the earlier classics.

    I took 2 of the to the vet yesterday. Tinker, the 12-pound black cat, and Maesie, the 5.5-pound gray and white OG . Both got a clean bill of health, although Maesie has this chronic respiratory thing every vet wants to fix and no one has. But they always go through the same process and it can get annoying. We've been there, done that, and she just soldiers on. It sure is expensive though.

    Not much planned for . Mostly just work, date night, and the . We have a work holiday soirre (yes, that's what they call it!) on Saturday that requires "semi-formal" dress, so I had better try on my suit (singular) to make sure it still fits. One big drawback to working remotely is that I haven't met too many people, so I will know no one there (besides my friend who recommended me). Not an environment I'm very good in. But we'll give it a try.

    Morning Mastodonians!

    Ever since I got back from my knee injury, I have been playing some pretty good hockey (hope I didn't jinx myself). Had another solid game in the net this morning, and we pulled ahead to win, 7-5. I didn't have a chance on a couple and a few more were very frustrating, but I felt good, anticipated the play, and made some nice saves. I'm thinking of getting new goalie pads but that's like a $1,000 investment and I wonder how much longer I can keep going?

    I have been doing something pretty amazing, for me at least. Not only am I getting books read and reviewed, I'm actually cutting into my ridiculously long Currently Reading list. It's down to only 6 books! I wrote 3 reviews yesterday. Unfortunately, none of them knocked me out, but hey, they can't all be grand slams. You can find my reviews here:

    @LALegault what is it about this topic that makes people so intractable? Yes, killing 1,200 civilians is terrible and should be wholeheartedly condemned. But it doesn't justify slaughtering over 20,000. That seems like a pretty reasonable take to me.

    Morning Mastodonians!

    Morning hockey has been going well. I have been playing well despite my recovering knee and have hardly noticed it. We've had good attendance in the new year, despite some skaters flying south for the winter. I'm jealous. Tuesday's hockey was a skate in the park for me, as the teams were not very well-balanced. I didn't face too many shots and only gave up 2 goals, one on a breakaway and the other on a nice tip in front of me. But I barely worked up a sweat.

    jda,
    @jda@social.sdf.org avatar

    I had a good day of gaming yesterday. On Tuesday, C and I started a new RPG, this one probably even longer than our recently finished 200+ hour Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Gloomhaven. There are 95+ dungeons and after 2 hours we didn't even get thru 1! So I played the tutorials. Then we got some time in on . And then we finished a Serious Sam 4 chapter, although I had to increase our life count to 10 and we barely eked by then. Good times.

    jda,
    @jda@social.sdf.org avatar

    Not nearly as much fun planned for . We will do our usual date night visit to a local watering hole. I'm still worried about the weekend forecast. Not sure if we'll get plowable snow here but, as I've been saying for months, I really need to clean out the garage to at least squeeze in @adrienne Chevy Bolt EUV. Maybe we'll spend Saturday doing that, although we were planning on meeting some folks for dinner.

    Eureka! Time to dust off my dog training skills. I just picked up a client - an 89-year-old woman and her rescue chihuahua who barks non-stop and keeps jumping on the couch. The first consultation is tomorrow.
    She's apparently very hard of hearing, so this should be interesting.
