Fujifilm 16-50mm Sample Gallery

I took Fuji's new kit lens to Stockholm to see how it performs as an all-around travel-light option.

I swear I re-learn this every time. If you have an opportunity to get out and shoot, even if the conditions seem less than ideal, take it. After an unexpectedly sunny day, clouds rolled in over Stockholm as I walked to Monteliusvägen, the highest point looking over the city. And yet, this band of sky just wouldn't quit for nearly an hour past sunset.

I've published a new book! Take Control of iPhone Photography teaches how you can get great photos from the camera that's always with you.

15 years later, evergreen shout out to @jean and the folks at SmileOnMyMac, who not only liked my idea when I pitched it to them, they built a website (sadly offline now it seems) and made FrownOnMyMac mugs! https://twit.social/@glennf/112198266208847231

Believe me when I say that (a) the Quad at University of Washington right now is amazing as the cherry blossoms flower; and (b) being there at sunrise is the best time. Photographed with the new Sigma 50mm f/1.2 Art lens. #photography #CherryBlossoms #Seattle #Sigma

Glenn Fleishman's Kickstarter project, How Comics Were Made, is in its final hours with a few $$ left to get over the top. Time for some Glenn-mentum! This is an amazing project and I want lots of people to see it when it's done.

Delightful early morning at the UW Quad today to see the cherry blossoms. 🌸 (Now in desperate need of more ☕.)

This wasn't mentioned in Apple's release notes, but in watchOS 10.4 Apple tweaked the Timer interface to be more readable and similar to watchOS 9. As @chockenberry detailed in an excellent essay last September, that redesign was terrible. So this new-new/old look in 10.4 is certainly welcome.

Lost the day to computer issues, now finally resolved. Ugh. So, to balance the scales, here's a photo taken with the new Leica SL3 of a dog in a motorcycle rider's bag.

I'm not ordering an X100VI, but the news (and lots of commentary) of the new camera has inspired me to look at my library for shots taken with my X100V that I like. :-) It's photography, people: make images you enjoy, regardless of what camera you have.

Hasselblad 907x/CFV 100C Sample Gallery

I spent a week making photos with the Hasselblad 907x/CFV 100C medium format camera system for a new sample gallery at DPReview.

DPReview published an article I've wanted to write since the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro first came out. While shooting sample galleries, I kept running into complexity. You can capture 48MP using each device, but sometimes you get 12MP. Or if you use Macro mode with the telephoto camera active, you end up with terrible results because the system makes a tiny crop of the Ultrawide camera and scales that up. This article covers those examples plus a few other gotchas.

If you're thinking of launching a Kickstarter, especially for a book, this is REQUIRED READING. Glenn Fleishman @glennf details the process of planning, running, and fulfilling a $750K book project. Lots of hard data and lessons learned in here.

Quick iPhone tip for the holidays: if you have an iPhone 15 Pro/Max running iOS 17.2, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and turn on Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro. When you’re capturing video of family events, tap the Vision Pro icon to record spatial video. It will look like regular video on your phone, but if you get a Vision Pro (next year or in the future) you’ll have those clips in spatial format. (This also assumes you have the space to store it.)

I'm doing a free webinar tomorrow, Dec 21, about AI/ML-powered features in Lightroom and supporting my latest book Adobe Lightroom: A Complete Course and Compendium of Features!

I’ll be covering topics such as denoising, the new Lens Blur feature, and powerful AI-assisted masking. But truly one of the best parts of presentations like this is the ability to ask questions, so bring your queries and I’ll try to answer as many as I can in the time allotted.

Why are TVs so inexpensive these days? Because the TV companies make billions by recording what you watch and sell that data to advertisers. “These TVs can capture and identify 7,200 images per hour”. This article tells you how to turn it off:

Over the past few years I've been brought in to photograph a series of swim competitions here in #Seattle. Easily some of the most technically challenging shooting I've ever done (lighting conditions, speed, subject variability, plane of movement changes). It's been very rewarding. Most of the work is delivered in color of course but I enjoy shooting some black and white as well. Shot on Fujifilm (currently an X-H2s). #photography #fujifilm

Did you hate that extra confirmation dialog on Apple Watch when you finished a workout that Apple added in watchOS 10.0? It's now gone, but not entirely. If you found it helpful, go to Settings > Workout and enable End Workout Confirmation.

It's been a couple months: if you bought an iPhone 15 Pro, what (if anything) are you using the nifty Action button for? I mapped it to launch the Camera app, but muscle memory has me launching Camera by swiping right-to-left on the lock screen when I want to quickly grab a photo.

Big budget, male-dominated historical epic earns $78 million long-weekend first box office and is lauded as a success. But big-budget, female-dominated superhero action movie makes ~$124 million and deemed a spectacular failure. Sometimes I hate this reality.
