Grow your garden this year.

Potatoes, kale, whatever you feel like. Share with your neighbors.

When it's fall go be a squirrel and collect acorns and hickory and walnuts and chestnuts. Learn how to process and cook them all.

Reminder that Joe Biden's stolen 2020 primary "win" was already locked in before America's first confirmed covid case and before the George Floyd uprising went global. The political landscape changed so wildly between January and November that year, it was unrecognizable. In other words, the last time anyone left of the nazis got any real political say in this country, was a pandemic, several wars, and at least two genocides ago. It is not unreasonable at all to point out that Biden represents nobody, and if he had had to face an open primary in late 2016 he already would have lost - let alone this year. The "Democratic" party is a ideologically ossified cabal of neolib austerity ghouls and rebranded neocon warhawks, and they don't give a single solitary tin SHIT about your consent to be governed.

But yeah, bully me with the threat of what Trump will do! That'll definitely make me fall in line! 🙄🙄🙄

joelmeador,
@joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

@CosmicTrigger i don't feel like motherfucker even faced an open primary in 2020. more to me like the whole of humanity got ratfucked into biden's bullshit and here we are getting mass gaslit out the overton window

The special weather statement for central indiana right now:

  • Record lows expected
  • 40mph gusts and sustained high winds
  • Also btw there's a wildfire risk because it's low humidity and spring isn't fully here yet so the entire landscape is exposed dry dead stuff and half of us smoke cigarettes
joelmeador,
@joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

@pleaseclap I liked the last sentence which was and I'm paraphrasing "if you have agricultural interests, lol lmao"

joelmeador,
@joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

@pleaseclap I mean yeah, we have been in drought almost constantly for like 3y

joelmeador,
@joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

@pleaseclap Honestly just the act of trying to grow a fucking lettuce or tree helps so much in seeing where we are in the climate weirding. Looking at weather reports every day and drought monitors and realizing it's not "normal" that 2 of the last 4 years we've gotten like bingo rain for multiple summer months in a row.

Like many other denials if you never leave your safehouse it's ignorable, If you are on a bike or in your yard or walking around and the AQI is 180 because of wildfire smoke in Indiana, like… shit is not going alright.

    This piece about Uber by @pluralistic contains just about the tightest and clearest description of how Toronto got where it is today.

    joelmeador,
    @joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

    @c_9 @pluralistic This is very similar to the issues in some US cities, too. The one where I live is the state capital and a city-county combined govt. The State we live in often overrides local law and municipal votes, so even if the people who live here manage to claw something good out of the suburban voters, we still get punished by far right state lawmakers. it fuckin sucks. we cannot have nice things.

    joelmeador,
    @joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

    @tonydewan @c_9 @pluralistic Yes, and reading any account of the process from the start of this bill, all you hear is "the vast majority of citizens who showed up supported BRT" at every hearing about this. Like Cop City, the people in the majority just do not give a single fuck about governing for the affected citizens. They care about the people paying them in the backroom.

    More than three years after consistent exposure to teargas, my periods are still beyond fucked up and I go through an immense amount of pain that I didn’t experience before. I’m on day three and I can’t even drive. And I should be so lucky... I know people who can no longer have children following repetitive exposure to chemical weapons, and a slew of other serious medical conditions/problems that people didn’t have before. At the time when numerous people were sharing similar experiences there seemed to be so much interest in researching what State sanctioned chemical warfare was doing to civilians and the effects it has... now? Seemingly nothing. I know this type of research takes time but doesn’t seem like anyone cares anymore.

    joelmeador,
    @joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

    @alissaazar I remember the smells in-person and folks talking about this but I haven't anything much about it from anyone since I left the bird site. All I know is a few class action lawsuits happened and got settled around it, but that doesn't help anyone with long-term consequences or knowing what they would even be. I wonder if there's anything out of hong kong given how much gas was being used everywhere. I don't have the research chops to find out.

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs Agreed.

    My take would be copyright has been used as a proxy for lack of consent in a lot of ways and violating copyright by LLM scrapers is not a big deal because of the copyright violation in itself but clearly it is violating a lot of artist's consent, which I do not like at all.

    I don't know if this is a good take, but it's how I've felt as people talk about this for the last few months.

    Garden and Plant Picture Thread Head 🧵

    joelmeador,
    @joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

    March 2020

    Covid is nipping at our heels at this point, but lockdowns and things haven't started yet.

    I finish construction of the raised bed with some inputs from my own compost and some commercial soil.

    dark brown compost with lots of organic material atop a cardboard sheet
    a partially constructed raised bed with a rechargeable drill sitting on it
    a completely constructed raised bed with nothing inside yet

    joelmeador,
    @joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

    March 2020

    This is how I constructed the soil inside. At the bottom I put some geotextile fabric. I probably wouldn't do it again if unless I had gophers or something.

    Then I put lots of partly broken down sticks and rotting logs. In retrospect I should have sawed or axed a few of the bigger pieces apart before I put them in there.

    Then I put the sod I removed from ground around the raised bed on top of leaves and the logs. Then finally I did layers of soil and compost and straw.

    IIRC it took about 25 wheelbarrows of soil to finish this off. I was real tired.

    a raised bed partialy filled with logs sticks, grass and leaves
    a half-full raised bed with sod showing at its top layer
    a wheelbarrow next to a mostly full raised bed that is covered in straw and soil

    joelmeador,
    @joelmeador@kolektiva.social avatar

    March 2020

    Finally I finished off the raised bed as it was getting dark. So the easy (for me) part of growing food was done.
